Iowa needs to adapt with the time or just accept that the football program is just a really good FCS program masquerading as a wannabe perennially late December bowl team.
Fuck it. Have them drop down. It would be a far more entertaining schedule and they have a better playoff system.
At some point, Iowa fans need to get off their high fucking horse of righteousness and realize that the old way of creating championship programs are over. Promising to work harder than everyone else and recruiting kids from 7 letter consolidated schools can’t be the entire formula.
Every argument against removing KF falls apart in two seconds when challenged:
“We won’t get anyone better!”
-IU, TTU, and Vandy are proof that you can.
“He’s given millions to UIHC!”
-And I bet the next coach will too.
“We don’t want to be Nebraska!”
-They want championships, you don’t?
The last truly special Iowa team was in 2015 and they stood at the threshold of national relevance in the playoff era and it faded as soon as CMC stepped on the field in the Rose Bowl. Since then, it’s been a decade of “will they, won’t they” breakthrough as well as be 3 years behind the times.
Kirk defenders love to talk about Top 10 finishes & 10 win seasons & not wanting to be Nebraska & constantly turning over HCs in search of relevancy. They are remarkably silent, though, about the lack of championships for a program that’s supposed to be one of the best outside of the blue bloods.
I like Siepker and I think he has had some great stuff but the schtick has kind of run its course with his latest on Kirk and Iowa football. The Hawks have nothing to be arrogant about. The “small market, plucky team that doesn’t get the big recruits” approach isn’t the formula anymore.
So, offseason roster building. We’re not talking tear down but some major renovations are needed. FA wise, you let everybody but Chenal, Thornton, and Araiza walk. Yes, that’s half the starting secondary leaving but (common theme), you need the money elsewhere.
Most of the core has played a full season more of games since Mahomes took over. They are fucking tired. Regression and wear and tear were bound to hit and it has hit hard this season. Hell, the whole organization probably just needs a mental reset at this point.
The @kcsportsnetwork.bsky.social post game show was right last night: the check has come due on the Kingdom.
Honestly, that’s okay. Organizations need to adapt & evolve. Unfortunately, while KC was so far out ahead of everybody, the rest of the league caught up. Staying home in January isn’t bad.
Finally, DeBoer just doesn’t seem to be a cultural fit at Bama. Just depends on how much patience they have with him but if he’s a free agent, he could do wonders at Iowa with Grubb.
Entz is an Iowa and is 62-12 as a HC since 2019.
Spencer is the one that intrigues me the most. He’s never played or coached anywhere other than NCC but is 44-1 as a HC since 2022 and has 2x D3 NCs. NCC puts up insane offensive numbers and he could fundraise like hell in the Chicago area.
Woodley is kind of dependent on what Drake does and he may not want to leave Des Moines but I would think he is the first (local) name that comes to mind.
Polasek just nabbed his 1st NC as a HC at NDSU and coached at Iowa for 4 seasons. A lot of history in Fargo that may keep him there.
It’s time.
5 names for Iowa football to consider as their next HC:
Joe Woodley, Drake
Matt Entz, Fresno State
Tim Polasek, NDSU
Brad Spencer, North Central College
&
Kalen DeBoer….provided Alabama drives him out, lol.
I have left the room to go to the kitchen and the Cubs have homered 4 times.
Redemption and happiness for the Oilers flashing woman, I say.
JFC, Rory.
A good chunk of the fan base feels the opposite.
Somewhere, there is an executive dreaming up a plan to start pitching schools on dissolving from the NCAA and creating an independent football league and their opening pitch will be “Notre Dame didn’t have to revenue share and neither should you”.
Notre Dame should be snapping the ball with 1 second left on the play clock.
And the AI will be directed to cease operations when United Healthcare denies any continuation of care.
Hot damn. Would have liked to see Smith stay but the Cubs have they know how to identify high ceiling talent in the draft. Rearm in July.
The more I hear about John and Yoko, the more pretentious the song gets. Almost an automatic skip for me now.
Best: Christmas Wrapping
Worst: War is Over
We remember what Bill looked like without Brady, right? Right?
See, it wasn’t good.
How stupid do you think the former PAC12 feels right now? Two teams in championships for different conferences and you likely would have gotten 2, maybe 3 in the playoff if you had kept it all together.
Transactional realignment is stupid.
If you live in a city named Columbus, you don't get to complain if someone plants a flag in land that doesn't belong to them.
lol, Nebraska is soft as baby shit.
There are simply not enough words to describe how frustrating the Chiefs OTs are.
Or, you create another division and invite the top 26 current FCS teams into it with the same style of alignment. Seasons would be 12 games, 9 conference games w/ 3 OOC games but no out of division games. Playoffs are 16 teams, top 2 teams each make it. Easy peasy.
In a perfect world, the FBS goes to an 8 conference, 10 team division. Plenty of criteria to determine who the 80 are: winning %, top 25 finishes, top 25 H2H, conference and division championships, enrollment, bowl selections, etc. Average that out and there you go. The remaining 54 or so go to FCS.
