Americans are bad at tragic necessity. If something is a "necessary evil," there's a lot of pressure to embrace it as a positive good. This shows up even in something as trivial as many liberals' refusal to admit that masking had drawbacks and we'd all rather not do it, all things being equal.

“Some fans”, my dude, it’s not even a little bit subtextual.

There’s a cadre of Dems clearly preparing presidential runs by reaching across the aisle (confirming Noem, etc), each appealing to the elusive centrist demographic, each meriting scorn.

David Hogg was ousted from the DNC vice chairmanship for committing to primary ineffective career Dems, morons like these. It would be really, really cool to have an opposition party. Instead we get to see the few men and women of principle picked off (arrested or assassinated) one-by-one.

Knew an ACNA priest who insisted that any serious Christian should at least consider Catholicism and while true it’s certainly not on the exclusive merits of liturgy in the year of Our Lord 2025.

Thinking about this dude on X for whom the most cutting retort to laxity in Catholic worship and liturgy was that the diocese in question was functionally Episcopalian. Oh child.

This is true of pretty much anything I’ve seen more than five times (The Village, Children of Men, perhaps The Last Jedi most of all, half of which I think is genuinely bad)

It is surely too much to hope for self-reckoning, much less a harrowing, much less repentance in JD’s heart, and yet—

the rich can only conceive of things in terms of money and people being bought and sold to do whatever they're doing

Which is maybe an opposing claim but maybe not. I do find men frequently romanticize/express certain sets of feelings at the expense of others.

I regularly think about and reference this Wallace interview with Pearl Buck in which he asks if she thinks if there’s any real difference between men and women and she says of course, men are more emotional, more romantic in their thinking.

"basic common sense" is not -- at all -- what the Mystery of the Annunciation is about; nor the Mystery of the Nativity; nor the miracle of the loaves & the fishes; nor the entirety of Matthew 5-7. The Cross is a scandal -- the entire message of the Cross is an affront to "basic common sense"!

Gifted the boy his first rosary. Coincided with our children’s Bible reading of the crucifixion, resurrection, Pentecost. He asked how to become a Christian. He’s baptized: I said what’s left is to ask Jesus to live in your heart. He asked, rolled over, fell asleep. ⚓️

Pleased to report to fellow Amazon haters and Hobbit grievers that War of the Rohirrim sounds, feels, and looks (character animation notwithstanding) like Middle Earth.

One New Year’s res involves coming to terms with the fact that I have attempted to diversify my wardrobe, have attempted colors and textures, and simply do not enjoy playing with what matches. No intuition for it, endless capacity for doubt. It’s scarecrow Johnny Cash time.
