Scientific research has long assumed gray wolves are non-migratory during springtime, staying put to tend to litters of nearly helpless pups.
A new study on wolves and elk near Cody upends that notion.
This research wouldn't have been possible without my amazing and supportive co-authors: my friends and former labmates -@kristinjbarker.bsky.social & @wenjingxu.bsky.social , my PhD advisor - Arthur Middleton, and collaborators at WGFD - Tony Mong and Ken Mills!
We found evidence of wolves shifting homesites with young pups along elk migratory routes to their summer ranges. We even have trail camera evidence from Wyoming Game and Fish Department of a 1-2 month old pup being carried from the den to a rendezvous site!
Excited to share the first publication from my PhD research about wolves using diverse movement tactics, including migrating and moving young pups, to track the partially migratory Cody elk herd in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem! news.berkeley.edu/2025/08/01/p...
Congrats Lauren!!
These recommendations are from interviews, discussions, and surveys from producers, agency staff, and other experts working on wildlife conflict on working lands. 2/2

‼️worth repeating: if you're a Forest Service employee in the West who's being impacted by layoffs or has insight into wtf is going on and how ops/landscape/people will be changed, I can be reached on Signal at 509-953-7883.
The news getting you down? I invite you to stare at this chart of solar and wind deployed capacity in China.
They blew past their ambitious 2030 target... last July.
Oh look it’s me. Lol I didn’t even know they posted this. I had to hear it from one of my faculty that was complementing me on the interview.
Hiring a PhD student (August 2025 start) to work on research related to elk reintroduction/spatial ecology using a large long-term dataset. Lots of flexibility in developing specific research questions! See the job link for more info: jobs.rwfm.tamu.edu/view-job/?id...
This is well written, even if you are someone who doesn't agree with everything written - plus he mentions 3 studies from my lab :)
