i think the biggest stumbling block for e.g. an indie team would certainly be design+story, like to really get a good dungeon the whole mechanics/dungeon concept have to emerge organically from some kinda interesting story-world + design process, vs being "remix existing OoT"

i think one big part of making OoT dungeons work is having the design/art/code teams small, nimble/tight-knit and the pipeline being accommodating enough to edit stuff later in the level pipeline. doubt N would work at that smaller scale again, but im sure someone could do it w/ today's tools

Aesthetically pokemon and ff/dq feel different - even if we had yearly releases, ff/dq's target audience feels Teen+. I think they could be more popular series, but pokemon has a lot of similarities to baby/kids media

Looking at the definition from 2008 it makes the games within the category feel so distinct. Like Hades feels like an soso action game, while Spelunky is more like this definition, and card roguelites are sort of their own thing drawing on TCGs to various effects

is it a right conclusion that Spelunky HD still feels pretty distinct from modern rogue---- type games? It feels much more in conversation with roguetype games compared to the usual metaprogression type game. it makes me think about roguetype design (although i'm attached to fixed world design..)

Not that youth attachment is good, but it's likely bc Pokemon (the game that the article mentions kids actually playing) is heavily marketed to kids and a fam-friendly brand (toys, merch, anime). FF/DQ now are often gacha spinoffs, MMO, or games targeted towards nostalgic or older audiences

i feel sorry for everyone going all why is there no manga/anime with no trans chars when there exists accessible mediums like visual novels where that actually happens cause we can tell our own stories entirely independently without relying on billion dollar studios to fund and censor the projects

The less your game is an essential part of ad economies, the more youd have to pay for ads to reach humans at the other side. Since your game is less efficient "ad economy fuel".

I think the Twitch/Youtube era of games (2010s- on) shouldn't be defined by game genres - roguelites, open world, gacha, multiplayer survival - but by the transformation of games into something much more embedded in and fueled by online advertising economies. Which is to me is mundanely frightening.

Ads are a weird lens to view games. Marketing best practices like "pick a popular genre" basically gives ad credits/views to someone: A trendy game helps streamers gain views, or exclusive news helps showcases gain views. So...(1/3)

I think you'd definitely qualify, I think game design teaching jobs tend to be more lenient on typical job history qualification, more focused on design track record
