I don't love the idea of "game worlds being real" because it encourages an overinvestment in their fantasy..I feel like games should simultaneously evoke real life/the fantasy of the game

Thinking about this, I feel like some designers believe their game worlds really, truly exist, and so lack game-wide options as an attempt at "realness". But I always felt there's something weird about that belief in the realness of a game, people should be engaging with the game aware it is fiction

Also... does this not encompass what we lose with chat gpt or google search... being able to rely on your local elderly snake fact man who can answer your elementary snake questions. Now if I see him again I can be like "Thanks for the snake facts!"

i feel like this story pretty much encompasses what I want in life and games. Also it ends with the girl picking up the snake and putting it safely back into the bushes

today walking home i saw a big snake in the road. a girl said "this snake is so cute!", a mom said "that snake is scary!". I said "wow, what a cool snake," hiding my confusion. luckily, an old man appeared from the bushes, who was able to answer my snake questions.

One stick only, but the 2nd time is occasionally useful on the overworld. The game is playable on keyboard/dpad but noticeably harder, I'd recommend analog

Given all the fancy wasteful ai video tech out there it amazes me that there hasn't been anything practical done like multiple-ending video files that branch based on global time. E.g. making one trailer that can say "out now!" Or "coming soon" at the end, but baked into the video file

I think I'll forever have a soft-spot for Analgesic Productions' games. No two are alike mechanically or even thematically, but they have a shared dreamlike feel to them. Fragmented worlds, strange prose and the *feel* of what videogames are below the surface.

out of all the steam store updates this year i think allowing 60fps mp4s on store pages is by far the biggest godsend. prior to 2025 everyone had to learn dark arts of gif compression and even then they still looked like ass because of the dithering

It's really interesting to compare this experience to playing modern streamlined DQs. There's of course just having a much stronger mental map of the game, but it's fun to see the map slowly fill in and also keep track of clues and where you found them, especially in a sprawling game like DQ2

It's super useful! Especially with how open ended dq2, now that I got a ship it pretty much seems open ended

I've been hand mapping DQ2's overworld and it has a nice relaxing jigsaw puzzle quality to it (and is helpful for playing the game). Kind of funny that there's reverse south America with its tip next to Florida.

Going for an all-levels run on Han-Tani's Challenge (or the level below .. Melos's Trick) is like an exquisite course meal of weird bumpslash action. Every enemy comes into focus in a really sharp way, it's kind of like "close listening" to an album or really looking up close at a painting
