נגיפי POX הם נגיפי dsDNA, כאשר ווקסיניה הוא הנחקר ביותר. בניגוד להנחה הישנה על שכפול עצמאי בתא המאכסן, מחקרים עדכניים מראים שחלבוני המאכסן, ובינהם איזופורמות TOP2, ממלאים תפקיד מרכזי ברפליקציה.

אנשים עם איידס (HIV מתקדם, CD4<200) מתקשים לפנות זיהומים ויראליים, מה שמאפשר שכפול ממושך של SARS-CoV-2. המחקר בחן כיצד דיכוי חיסוני זה משפיע על האבולוציה הנגיפית.
