Hopefully not drifting too far from his classic, wholesome look - just had an idea of how to keep an outline of the iconic trunks but make them a bit more incidental as part of a whole red underlayer.

Oh thank you! Really cool that you picked up on those aspects. Indeed, it's a bit of a balancing act - color vs lighting, detail vs composition. At some point you just gotta surrender to the story, ignoring how it should look in favor of it should feel.
