Had to have failed to be approved by a majority of presbyteries, but no easy to find online records of pby vote tallies. Close vote in committee, and I seem to remember some of the debate in plenary about not wanting to amend BoO to infringe on preaching. 🤔

Some mainline denominations — including my own (PCUSA) — may find some of these numbers surprising.

As I boarded my first flight on the way to Bahrain a few weeks after 9/11, I texted my family with my flight and seat number before takeoff. And I've continued to do so before every takeoff ever since. 🛫

Because President Carter was in the Navy, it seems most appropriate and respectful to use the terms correctly. (FWIW, I was in the Navy for 33 years.)

Sherrilyn Ifill writes a powerful critique. Worth the read.

The new Republican House began with an obvious lie advanced in the service of Christian nationalism, so we’re off to a great start

I don't remember that kind of writing being part of the lessons on how to write a brief when I was in law school.

Here's the link to the full document for those who want to see it; there's additional similar language near the quote screenshotted above:

Denmark Offers to Buy U.S. “We believe that by giving the U.S. an educational system and national health care, it could be transformed from a vast land mass into a great nation,” a spokesperson for Denmark said.

Original source is satire by Andy Borowitz in The New Yorker

It's actually satire from Andy Borowitz in The New Yorker, but it's still funny.

This is an excellent, sobering piece by Ken. He takes issue with one of my posts, and I'm afraid he's right. Exulting in another person's murder has been a very American thing. I think we see that dysfunction more clearly online than off, but bloodthirstiness has always been part of our DNA.

As I try the fresh Bluesky air, I may not follow back and might just block anyone who follows me who I don't recognize or can't tell the connection from a quick profile glance — or who doesn't reply to me dm'ing to ask how we're connected.

One of the greatest deceptions of our time is the lie that we should be more concerned about a poor person misusing the welfare system or an immigrant crossing illegally than we are about bullies with unprecedented wealth and power.

I look forward to listening to what Chip — one of my favorite scholars — has to say on this.
