i love how you have to whisper in a library. there should be more whisper-only spaces. speak softly if you must speak at all

poets be like "yeah i know a place" and it's a romanticized view of a gas station at 2am on a long drive to another city where your eyes soften on the fog and squint at the burning fluorescent lights in the interior of the convenience store inside...what was i talking about again

“Sometimes I am so surprised I show up to write a poem completely empty and yet, something shows up. Just keep making space for your work. Even if it doesn't make sense.”

Shō Poetry Journal on a kitchen counter. Cover depicts a gorgeous blue painting of a figure in a white dress with a bird head sitting on a limb under the moon. AMORAK HUEY

Beer Garden, Ohio

Nearby, someone sparks a cigar to life,
the odor of it rises, is what
we both will remember later—
not the light, which is ordinary,
nor the depth of the sky,
the ever so slightest of winds, absence
of temperature-but the smell
of burning earth, rich like that,
and the rough wood table between us
and the fear neither of us can shake
that none of this is real,
that like the smoke it could all go away
which it could, but it hasn't.

The new issue of @shopoetryjournal.bsky.social is gorgeous & I’m grateful to have two poems in it. Here’s one:

Empire of Dreams
BY CHARLES SIMIC

On the first page of my dreambook
It’s always evening
In an occupied country.
Hour before the curfew.
A small provincial city.
The houses all dark.
The storefronts gutted.

I am on a street corner
Where I shouldn’t be.
Alone and coatless
I have gone out to look
For a black dog who answers to my whistle.
I have a kind of Halloween mask
Which I am afraid to put on.

good night everyone

"Is this the work of a plot-driven novel? Wrong question, entirely the wrong question. We are also wrong to ask whether poetry needs a plot."
