Also lack of clergy (or clerical lack of industriousness in recording events) so gaps in recorded events but that doesn't look like this parish had that issue.

Ruth has mentioned most of the reasons I've seen. Others: cash tight [even if later socially prominent], parents favored different churches (one or both), living somewhere else temporarily and wanted to wait until back to home parish.

My grandparents. He had immigrated from Scotland to the U.S., then Canada, then returned to the UK with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces for WWI. She was working as a Red Cross nurse. Photo taken in 1918, although they didn't marry until 1924 in Toronto.

With that background, she talked her way into a job for the Pequot Mills, playing 'Priscilla Pequot' to do publicity for the mills.

My grandmother Barbara Learoyd [born Barbara Poor, 1909 to 2001] graduated from college in 1931. Since it was the height of the depression, jobs were scarce. She had been on debate teams in high school and college so she has some experience with public speaking.
