Yakuza as a franchise had existed for years and Majima as a character was a fan favorite since *day one* and when Yakuza 0 came out, they basically changed his entire character drastically from the ground up - and everyone loved it.

You can change stuff and still retain fans. They did it already.

They do have a separate patch that keeps it all vanilla but yea it was surprising. Some of the other more major changes are either backporting mechanical changes from later entries or re-implementing stuff from other versions of Phantasia

This is the pattern I always notice with writers in any medium where they just don't have the cultural intelligence to understand why people are ever mad at them.
