We decided that was too stressful/grindcore though and got lucky with a role that doesn't pay as well as the bay but is really good for a MCOL area and is a longer term sustainable lifestyle.

For sure! Early in our careers my BF and I had chatted what if we just lived in the bay in a van or in a SF style 8-14 person household. We'd earn about $300k-$500k combined per year in equivalent roles. We'd save up and then leave in under 5-10 years to a medium cost of living place and downshift.

I've always seen California as the "gold rush" state in the US. You go there, make your millions, then escape as quickly as possible. I'm very lucky that silicon valley made an outpost in the PNW otherwise I'd be forced to live there due to my career choice.
