Recent to then, I'd asked to go back full-time to my old captioning job, where I'd worked part-time over a decade, as filler for a freelance career that was often drought/deluge. They said yes.

I went with my gut & fabricated a reason for why I could say "not right now."

There was a time I was seeking higher-paying jobs in public service, media, etc. I had a lot of nibbles, and at Christmas 2023, was offered a government job.

I was overcome with panic as I considered taking it. It was what I wanted. I could "feel" more important, make a bit more.

But honestly, a person has to be a complete idiot to think it has to be either/or, that we are incapable of somewhere in between.

It has always been strange to me that the libertarian types are so anti-immigration. Aren't borders just arbitrary distortions of the labor market?

Im pro-freedom of movement because this is always the alternative. See: Europe currently drowning people in the Mediterranean.

My “fix” for this is to make border crossing stupid easy. So long as there’s no criminal history anyone can come in with a work or tourist visa. Overstaying a visa will be primarily settled via fines. Put the coyotes out of business.

As a former border reporter who crossed multiple times a week in order to do my job I can tell you that from the bottom of my heart, because of my work and what I saw, I believe that borders should not exist

My grandparents came here when the borders were essentially open!

The country has millions of folks living here who are undocumented, and they are making huge contributions to the country and the economy. Give them a path to citizenship and make it much, much easier to come here legally!

the thing is, we already have one way open borders. capital is free to move and settle where it wants in the name of cheap labor and low regulation, where as the demand is labor coming in must be stopped or at least highly regulated.
