People who work in Dublin are spending up to 6h commuting daily. Mostly driving or catching buses at ungodly hours. Some even get up at 4AM, drive to the city, sleep in their car & go to work to avoid the traffic jams that stretch miles at ‘rush’ hours & hours & hours! You pass ppl asleep in cars…
The other big benefit of a high speed line is you can run it to another city & then build one half way. That takes the pressure off the existing ones to allow the hundreds of thousands of new homes required in Ireland right now. A train to Dublin in an hour means you can work here but live 100k away
On a positive note, ppl with disabilities with a disability card as well as those who have an old age pension can travel for free. The thing is, everyone should be able to in order to cut emissions & reduce the stress & anxiety for people who need to commute every day!
And let’s not even talk about the lack of public transport outside the capital. Or the failure to properly link in Donegal.
Ireland faces fines of up to €28B for failing on Carbon emissions.
The problem for planners & politicians is that they don’t like simple solutions that work. Everyone wants a thing with their name on it.
Ironically, the Israeli-US war on Iran will cancel that underground train.
*Current govt plans include an unnecessary underground in Dublin [Heaven forfend they run a free Dublin electric bus service 24/7 instead when they can literally dig a hole for ~€3B.]. They even cut the direct train link from Dublin to the Continent via the Port of Rosslare!
Bonkers!
Current train travel time Dublin to Galway is 2h 20min for 207km. The TGV-M / Avelia Horizon SNCF top speed of 350kmph would cut it to under an hour! Of course free sensible public transport is never treated seriously in Ireland*. Current train ticket prices are ~€15 [£13/$17].
Find Swift’s poems to Stella! Try your local library for an inter-library loan. Swift, a Dublin hero, wrote Gulliver’s Travels, which amongst other works. A wonderful exponent of 18th C Irish wit. [I have mine in my bookcase of poetry beside my bed; poetry can lend you a thought to sleep on!]
Trans people have been *screaming* for *years* this was coming.
And here we are.
Unbelievably, the bigot in the post, mocking the suffering of the 9/11 families & survivors, is a US GOP Senator & accused fraudster from Alabama. The people of Alabama need to remove him from his seat ASAP. What a vile stain on their state & their lack of patriotism.
Brat means that in English everywhere! Brat in Irish is a big wraparound length of fabric. It can be worn as an outer garment, a shawl & importantly as a blanket when asleep. It’s a fundamental part of early medieval Irish clothing.
Non-British citizens may become Irish citizens by descent. The details are here: www.irishimmigration.ie/how-to-becom...
Brexit meansBritish citizens have lost their right to live & work in other EU countries. Fortunately, they still have the right to live in Ireland under the 1922 treaty. Once they live here long enough [see link] they can get Irish citizenship by naturalisation. Irish citizens have full EU status:
British citizens have the right to live, work & love here [& vice versa] under the CTA without a visa. As shown above the Irish govt is not transphobic & Ireland is under the EU courts & the European Convention on Human Rights: www.citizensinformation.ie/en/governmen...
For those leaving the UK, advice is available via the LGBT Ireland help resources which is the resource for trans ppl to make enquiries [TENI is the trans charity, but your first port of call is LGBT Ireland, who have resources for trans ppl moving here]: gcn.ie/lgbt-chariti...
Here she is talking about it. It looks hopeful. Her party are the senior party in the govt coalition. But read GCN to get an idea of trans ppl’s own experiences & expectations.
Here’s some of the activity of the Deputy Minister, who has a trans child. Be advised that the Irish Indo is a transphobic newspaper, but shows that there does seem to be action by the minister. archive.fo/202512281130...
This issue of Ireland’s GCN covers the challenges around trans healthcare in Ireland & the current failures of the service. Transgress, a grassroots org, has managed to get the Minister & Deputy Minister of Health to commit to change. I know this is a vital area for Queer ppl moving here*
In the recent past, many Irish Queer ppl fled to Britain to escape persecution from the Irish theocracy. Luchia is one such. The experience of many of us in finding safety, in Britain, is why we now support trans ppl escaping from the UK to live in peace here, away from UK govt persecution.
They should also call on the NL govt to ban senior execs from getting paid via Switzerland to avoid paying tax…
It’s my favourite Hiberno-Celtic object 😉
In the light of the persecution of Queer people in the UK, it is inappropriate for any Irish artist to take part in the Starmer initiative on Irish-British cultural links until his government recognises the human rights of Queer ppl. A boycott of these projects is vital.
*the British EHRC position that trans ppl ‘never had’ equal rights & should not have expected them is both factually wrong but also part of the reason that the UK govt has been called out by the worlds most respected genocide institute:
The highest EU court & the European Court of Human Rights are both clear that trans ppl are entitled to >full< human rights. This clearly shows that the UK Labour govt are now in breach by removing vital trans healthcare in Northern Ireland & Britain. SF, UUP, DUP & Alliance are in breach in NI*
They’re exposing their DNA to UV light no doubt!
Solidarity
You might want to investigate his position on genocide & reconsider ‘decency’
Unfortunately age is no barrier to such activity. Stalkers are as varied as their targets.
Who was doing the rating? What a strange comment. The Museum is nationally important. I don’t like the idea that everything begins & ends in Dublin. There are masterpieces all over the country! 👑
Took me a while to work out what you meant by cloak - I think you mean a brat - these were more like a wrap from my reading of the sources. I had an image of an English monk in my head when I read cloak! 😉
