Depending on the root case of this outage this could be anywhere from “Oh no, this is quite bad but will be resolved within a day” to “Oh fuck, oh shit, oh no, half the world’s HTTPS traffic is now unsecured and all the certs need to be revoked”.

While I generally share the anti consumerist sentiment here I’ll say that at least on the supermarket shelf you still see real products that aren’t part of a subscription service. If it’s awful quality at high price you can just walk away from it. It’s a one sided battle but choice is still yours.

Fair point, but I’d suggest chips are one of the worst products you could single out here. Pasta/noodles, rice, oats and whole grains, spices / herbs, basic dairy products are all generics with differences so marginal the end experience is almost identical. Flavour is a differentiator of experience.

There’s also a perverse proliferation of a great many standards for things that aren’t standard or don’t need to be, almost always backed by an industry player that wants to make its own products the standard and block competition through compliance.

Less standards that mean more please.

CE marking says “if there’s a relevant standard in EN/ISO you must meet it in order to sell your stuff”. ISO standards cost €50-5500 for single user licenses that terminate after a year. You won’t know if it applies to you until you buy it.

There are *thousands* of standards.

If a published industry standard is to actually be considered mandatory then all the details required to implement it should be freely available, doubly so when safety or product legislation does a big “you must comply with all relevant standards” hand wave.

I’m looking at you, CE & UKCA marking. 😠

That’s the Aldi/Lidl model. Certainly makes for a faster shopping and checkout experience so I’m happier overall, but it does then remove differentiation and consumer choice - there’s no room for a preference to guide the market so the buyer has no agency other than going to another marketplace.

Or it is its own whole class of other thing, I dunno. There’s gonna be decades worth of PhD theses out of this nonsense, that much I can be confident about.

It kiiiiinda feels like a behaviour you might associate with some manifestation of borderline personality disorder, particularly from a fear of abandonment. Doubly so if the LLM’s tone is always fawning/supportive regardless of context.

Any change in that tone or behaviour = betrayal.
