Can I call reps who don’t represent me? I get this question a lot, and you’re not going to like my answer, but no. Here’s why. I know it’s tempting. We see specific reps on the news all the time, and we know they’re the ones who are blocking bills from passing or not passing, ahem Ted Cruz. But they’re not going to vote on what you think, if you’re not a constituent. They don’t represent you. They’re elected to represent the people they serve. More to the point, if you call and they’re don’t represent you: 1. They can use your calls to justify their vote (e.g. "Oh, see? People who didn’t live in my district wanted me to do X. I did Y, what my district wanted me to do!) 2. You’ll also be tying up phone lines and inboxes, which ends up preventing actual constituents from calling in. Your time is much better spent getting friends and family to call.

I get wanting to do more, but calling reps from out of state *really* does not help & often backfires. See the image from @celestepewter.bsky.social on why.
