Seeing GRFPs cut by half is heartbreaking. I literally wouldn't have my PhD without GRFP support!
There were already far too few awards for the number of deserving applicants, and now this.

Great to see the support from the Boulder community for the science and scientists in our Federal laboratories.

Homes to people doing some of the most important research on Earth and its warming climate.
I commuted this exact stretch of road on a free bus for 3 years and this video hit me smack in the feels.
Statement begins: The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nationโs weather instrumentation network (among many others). Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayerโequivalent to a single cup of coffeeโand yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....
I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

They also got to explore how to make a light bulb light brighter and brighter by adding batteries to their circuits :)

The future is very uncertain, but I wanted to pop on here to share some of the fun activities we are doing each week. I made a new Chemistry curriculum for this semester and am excited to show some of that here :)

Iโve been part of PISEC for the past 4 years, visiting the same school 10x each semester with fun STEM activities. PISEC was paused because of the Executive Orders. 200 kids, 50 volunteers, 7 schools impacted.

mask up w/ a good mask (N95 or P100)
Avoid outdoor intense activity
Turn on air filters if you have them
a Corsi-Corsi-Rosenthal box *really* worked during NorCal's fires
Sadly, this story about our work in Chemical & Engineering News a few days ago is very timely again due to the #Palisades and #Eaton fires. bsky.app/profile/cenm...

And how could people protect themselves? Yesterday our groups published 2 papers on this topic. #MarshallFire
