Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.
I have not seen a crisis of this magnitude since yesterday
This will kill science in the US. This is how China wins. Why is this not on the news? Why are people not more upset about this?

Straight into court, and you can expect universities to be seeking injunctive relief immediately. This is the way Trump has always conducted himself, lawless and without honor or compunction.
This a funding myth.
There are no untapped wells of charity money that can support the kind of research biomedical scientists need to perform today. Most foundation grants are in 25 to 75K/year range, many are on the order of 1-3 years, and in spite of this, are highly competitive.
NERC Fellowships are open! We (Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, at the @liverpooluni.bsky.social) have a policy to provide a PERMANENT JOB to successful candidates at the end of the fellowship. Please in touch if you're interested!
Our short course in infectious disease epidemiology and control is now open for applications! I am proud to be the director of this popular hands-on course which will teach you the basics of epidemic modelling in just two weeks! Apply here and spread the word! www.infectiousdiseasemodels.org
If you're affected by the NIH intramural procurement pause, or by study section/grant review cancellations, and you'd like to talk for a story in C&EN, please reach out. (Signal username in bio)

Visualization of neutrophil migration kinetics after tailfin wound at a whole animal scale.
We need more research done at a whole-animal scale... so much we don't ask because we're just looking at the small local wound under the 🔬
I thought the influx of new BSkyers was a good reason to repost that I am co-editing a Collection at BMC Biology on " #Evolution of #Immunity". If you work on any of the topics listed in the link below, please consider submitting! 🦠🧪🪰
Happy #microscopymonday!
Here is a collaborative project I started in ~2018, looking at different cells stained for actin and DNA and all set to the same scale. More info (and poster printouts!) here: katrinavelle.wixsite.com/science/prin...
Have you ever thought to yourself… how can I make my #rstats plot UGLIER? Well, look no further, cuz it’s good plot-bad plot time! My students made plots that will make you want to laugh, cry, and throw your computer out the window. Which one do you think is the worst? 🧵🧪

Those pectoral spines we causing the sculpin some trouble.
I have a leica cm1950 which I prefer over the thermo (now epredia). I’m not familiar with rdw. When i needed one for a teaching lab I bought a 2nd of the same model. Regardless of the brand recommend the service package. All cryostats break down, the service package has paid for itself twice over.

Ugh now I’m both hungry and jealous!! Glad you liked it!
If you are recent PhD, looking for a marine microbial ecology postdoctoral position, the Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Marine Microbial Ecology is a great way to join us here in Tucson!

In a new paper in @asn-amnat.bsky.social, we ask if trait covariances (P matrices) show parallel or non parallel changes during replicated evolution. In 16 independent lake-stream pairs of stickleback, lake vs stream P show some consistent changes www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10.... …
I know @greatesttrek.bsky.social and @benjaminahr.bsky.social will appreciate my bday gift from HWIM: a graded Yeager. I’m only a little bit embarrassed. #greatestgen #greatesttrek

I started my group in 2020, in lockdown, without induction/mentorship bc of the chaos of the pandemic. New PI slack single-handedly kept me sane & grounded, & reminded me I wasn't alone. If you're a new PI, this article is great;my #1 tip is to join this amazing community newpislack.wordpress.com. 🧪
Happy Halloween from the UML biological science dept!
Come join our department!! UML Biol Sci is hiring a tenure track position in Ecology, Organismal, or Environmental Biology. We are a fast growing, scientifically diverse, and dynamic dept with a fantastic student population.
So happy to be back in beautiful Roscoff for the CNRS meeting on host pathogen co-evolution!!
