I recall hearing about that. One of my friends (in French studies, so maybe a different process) said his timeline at Cambridge was quick and easy. So I wonder if things are different. No idea.

I’ve now had 3-4 exchanges with business profs who seem baffled that humanities profs are resisting their assertions that AI can teach our courses and AI can replicate our work.

They all seemed quite shocked that “you don’t matter and this machine will replace you” isn’t a winning sales pitch.

What questions would you, an author, ask an acquisitions editor to find out if a given press is right for your book project?

Zrinka Stahuljak’s comparative literature course next quarter will cover much of the same subject matter she has taught in years past: a sweeping survey of writing from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. But, thanks to AI, the course format and materials will take on a totally new look for 2025. Comp Lit 2BW will be the first course in the UCLA College Division of Humanities to be built around the Kudu artificial intelligence platform. The textbook: AI-generated. Class assignments: AI-generated. Teaching assistants’ resources: AI-generated.

Academics: how are/will you be responding to publishers who want to license your work to generative AI companies?

My coeditors & I are being encouraged to agree to this. My gut reaction is No—am I helping train our nonhuman replacements?—but I'm no AI expert & want to consider arguments in favor.

FSU board OKs removal of over 400 courses from general education offerings after review “We’re living through an era of legislature-driven higher education reform,” FSU Provost Jim Clark said.

"The 432 courses that were removed from General Education range from Theories of African American Studies, Critics of Religion and American Multi-Ethnic Literature to Feminism and Globalization, the Evolution of Human Sexuality and LGBTQ History."

Also, made me think of how much of my own life has been (and will be) lived within an institution I’m often critical—even dismissive—of.

Went to a party for a colleague’s retirement. He’s been here 42 years. There were stories, old pictures. Lots of current and retired profs, new and old students, friends and family.

It was really moving—and a little distressing—to see a whole life summed up like that.

Just got back from a French history conference (WSFH) in San Francisco. Papers were great! Attendees were good at scarves/glasses. Got to share this etching of Napoleon eating parched peas and trying to fart some balloons to England.
