There is a special sort of pleasure in being a scholar of #18thc English literature and getting to enter into one's works cited lists names like "Timothy Silence" and "The Bottleman."

I'm so excited to share the punk-rock-vibes cover for Wild for Austen: A Rebellious, Subversive, and Untamed Jane. The book will be out 2 Sept '25. Thanks so much for your ongoing help getting this closer to the finish line for #JaneAusten's 250th, which promises to be a bright spot in 2025.

Do you enjoy yelling about how your niche historic interest enriches our understanding of the current moment to a group of like-minded obsessives? [2 months to submit papers and round tables]

I recall hearing about that. One of my friends (in French studies, so maybe a different process) said his timeline at Cambridge was quick and easy. So I wonder if things are different. No idea.

Can you explain? Do you mean Cambridge is bad to work with? Or that itโ€™s really big? Something else?

Iโ€™ve now had 3-4 exchanges with business profs who seem baffled that humanities profs are resisting their assertions that AI can teach our courses and AI can replicate our work.

They all seemed quite shocked that โ€œyou donโ€™t matter and this machine will replace youโ€ isnโ€™t a winning sales pitch.

What questions would you, an author, ask an acquisitions editor to find out if a given press is right for your book project?

Zrinka Stahuljakโ€™s comparative literature course next quarter will cover much of the same subject matter she has taught in years past: a sweeping survey of writing from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.

But, thanks to AI, the course format and materials will take on a totally new look for 2025.

Comp Lit 2BW will be the first course in the UCLA College Division of Humanities to be built around the Kudu artificial intelligence platform. The textbook: AI-generated. Class assignments: AI-generated. Teaching assistantsโ€™ resources: AI-generated.

Academics: how are/will you be responding to publishers who want to license your work to generative AI companies?

My coeditors & I are being encouraged to agree to this. My gut reaction is Noโ€”am I helping train our nonhuman replacements?โ€”but I'm no AI expert & want to consider arguments in favor.

The annual #18thc #c18 Studies Workshop at Indiana University has been an institution for 20+ years. Given "everything," I don't know how much longer it will endure, so please plan to come this May. Theme, appropriately enough: The Persistent Eighteenth Century

Went to a party for a colleagueโ€™s retirement. Heโ€™s been here 42 years. There were stories, old pictures. Lots of current and retired profs, new and old students, friends and family.

It was really movingโ€”and a little distressingโ€”to see a whole life summed up like that.
