Black women’s unemployment is rising. Economists say it’s a warning sign. New data released Thursday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics marked the third straight month of high unemployment rates for Black women.

We wrote about this in July when we first noticed this trend and its only gotten worse. 19thnews.org/2025/07/blac...

We finally have jobs numbers out this morning from September and take a look at this: big jump again in Black women's unemployment, now 7.5% from 6.7% in August.

This figure has been ticking up all year. This is now the highest unemployment rate Black women have faced in 4 years, since mid-2021.

Getting new details on this now:

As the arrest unfolded, teachers pleaded with the agents telling them the teacher had a work permit. The agents went into multiple rooms looking for teachers while children were present. One teacher hid with a child in her care while the agents stormed the facility.

134 Head Start programs across 41 states and Puerto Rico serving 58,627 children are at risk of closings as federal funds expire. Since the beginning of October, an additional six Head Start programs serving 6,525 children have been operating without federal funding.

ICE fears put pregnant immigrants and their babies at risk Fear of deportation is deterring people without permanent legal status from critical care. Doctors are worried for their health β€” and the health of their pregnancies.

ICE has recently targeted patients in hospital maternity wards and on their way home from prenatal visits. As a result,
many patients are skipping virtually all of their pregnancy-related health care.
~250k babies are born every year to immigrations w/o permanent status.

When it comes to rising costs, women are more worried than men β€” about everything A new 19th News/SurveyMonkey poll found that women β€” especially women of color β€” were more worried about covering the cost of groceries, housing, medical bills, child care and rent.

In every category surveyed β€” groceries, housing, child care, medical bills and retirement β€” women are more likely to say they are worried about covering those expenses.

Latinas consistently reported higher rates of worry than any other group across nearly all categories

What if diapers were free for the parents who need them most? Diaper Dollars, a nonprofit that gives families in need money to cover diaper expenses, could be a model for states looking to offer more solutions to the diaper need crisis.

Diaper need is a problem so big and with so few solutions that I'm always interested when I I come across a new one.

This particular one, Diaper Dollars, gives parents an e-card that deducts the price of diapers at checkout. Currently in Illinois and Ohio:

New Mexico will be the first state to make child care free The program, which is expected to save families $12,000 per child annually, is available to all residents regardless of income.

In the absence of a federal universal child care system, some states have worked to build their own systems, and New Mexico has been a leader in that effort over the past several years.
It will now be the first to make child care free for all.
