Mini thread discussion time cuz I think it's interesting: recently the YouTube algorithm has changed in such a way that has now made it that views from a desktop with an ad block and aren't engaging are no longer counted. this has inversely impacted channels with tech savvy viewers that put on- 1/4🧵

So what do I wanna make? I wanna start making work that focuses on being interesting and having multiple interpretations rather than work that attempts to interpret material for others. I think making my visual novel has really shown me how much I love creative work that isn’t me- 4/5🧵

Video essay as a term has become a kind of buzz word that isn’t actually helpful in the creation of thoughtful content. All this has made me slowly come to realize that I want to start focusing on changing my content away from the video essay bubble I’ve put myself into 3/5🧵

Against “video essay” as a genre. Often I find that social media rewards elements of media that are antithetical to thoughtful essay writing. This has lead to a lot of “video essays” to be barely disguised plot summaries, drama videos, documentaries, discussions, etc etc. 2/5🧵
