Jerome Sala Ode to Larry Rivers Once when doctors were giving my body the final once-over before an operation staring through me like cellophane with radioactive machines I was being wheeled out for my next exam and in the wheelchair across the aisle I saw the face of Larry Rivers. Compassionate young people were attending him spiffily dressed just as I imagined the progeny of a great artist would be. They laughed enjoying him and enjoying each other enjoying him. But he caught me staring and stared right back. He knew I knew who he was. And that I knew he didn’t know who I was. And this mutual knowing and unknowing quality of the knowing about knowing and unknowing seemed to amuse him.

He smirked. And in this mortal moment his recognition of my recognition seemed kind.

Elaine Equi Édouard Vuillard I like the busy patterns dotted with flowers, shawls and lawns, collars of Édouard Vuillard. They make me think of old women having a shot of brandy in their tea. O the pleasures of nightcaps, bingo, and sachet. It is nice to think of becoming an old lady even if you already are one. When you take off your glasses, a young girl stares out at the fuzzy world amazed to have made it this far.
