You have 100 'energy slaves' They pump your water, toast your bread, and move your car: Understanding the 'embedded energy' that powers our modern lives.

On The Climate Brink, I write about embedded energy and the 100 energy slaves that you have working for you (if you live in the U.S.).

After a devastating landfall in Jamaica, Major Hurricane #Melissa has emerged north of the island. In a few hours it will strike again, this time in southern Cuba.

It looks to me like Melissa is taking a few steps back so it can get a running start at Jamaica.

Plot of vertical temperature profiles measured by Argo floats for the top 120 meters of the ocean near Tropical Storm Melissa's NHC forecast cone as of 9 UTC 23 October. Inset map shows the locations of each profile where the line color matches the dot color. Black dashed line overlay indicates a depth of 60 m.

As of October 20, water in excess of 30Β°C extended 60 meters below Tropical Storm Melissa.

A slow-moving storm will upwell water (bring deeper water up to the surface) because its winds are actively pushing surface water away, but these Argo float observations show that deeper water is also warm!

The Representation of Spiral Gravity Waves in a Mesoscale Model With Increasing Horizontal and Vertical Resolution Computer simulations of tropical cyclones show the detailed structures of outward propagating spiral gravity waves As resolution increases, the wave properties come close to, but do not converge ...

Thanks for asking! The waves are discussed in Section 5.

I see inner core non-propagating waves, outer core non-propagating waves, and transverse bands too.
