Solidago for the Mid-Atlantic Region
Read Mt. Cuba's goldenrod report from the Trial Garden, which evaluated 70 species, cultivars, and ecotypes.
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast gardeners, here's a worthy distraction:
Mt Cuba Center just released their trial garden report on goldenrods! One of my favorite native plant families! Such a love/hate relationship with these, but they're great for insects and birds. ๐ฑ

Though to be fair I'm really selling it hard lol it just looks like a little mud wall in the middle of the yard most of the year as it's an ephemerak stream/ditch. Last year I found some American water plantain and blue flag iris to compliment the cardinal flowers, but sun is far too limited sadly

Then planted it with moisture and shade loving natives. The dam itself is only about 4ft high at deepest, but 75% is less than 1ft, the overflow only fills during active rain, the rest slowly seeps through the deadwood/thatch & clay ceating a true "seep" full of ferns, a wild Magnolia & dogwood๐

My biggest personal garden flex? ๐คhmm either my mini-meadow (about 350sqft partial shade hillside) or my "faux beaver dam" ... except the dam is more something I "geek" out about vs a stunningly gorgeous garden feature lol I dammed up a drainage ditch in my neighborhood, rerouted the water, and

Guess I need to figure out which hastags are used most often here ๐ค lol its a bit if a niche ask, but very much open to suggestions that are broader, just in general plants/"scenes" that might be identifiable via silhouette alone?

Specific species, Smoothe Purple coneflower is high on the list at the moment. As is Northern Sea oats, and Purple Top(tridens flavus). If you're familiar with #Piedmont Prairies or just tall-grass Prairies at all, what are some "Iconic " species perhaps recognizable by silhouette alone? ๐ค

I think spicata is the one. Has multiple small tufts of purple instead of the long stalks of more "common" variety found in stores. I have photos but have to find a program to convert them to regular jpegs apparently, not sure what exactly they are (format) but can't upload anywhere despite all

I guess ... not knowing exact species, this comment is pretty worthless lol but , there are variations that persist even theough the winter after going dormant in long straight spikes.

If we plant native plants like sedges, and give them something to actually grow on, just maybe - we wont have to wonder and speculate how many we lost, because we will always still have them around.

If we could just shift how we even VIEW our yards, that land, and what it is capable of/ its purpose... if we leave the leaves each fall instead of bagging in plastic coffins and sending to the landfill, if we turn off our lights at night to prevent the disruption to nocturnal wildlife,
