I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

Aside from the tone-deafness of these priorities, the "business taxes have increased by an astonishing 81%" is a textbook case of lying with statistics. Let's look at the likely source for this claim: an EY report commisioned by Oregon Business & Industry: oregonbusinessindustry.com/wp-content/u...

We live in one of the least-taxed, most unequal countries on Earth. It's unsurprising, but utterly shameless, for the Portland Metro Chamber to continue to pedal the fiction that Portland's businesses are especially tax burdened.

Abolish ICE, prosecute and imprison its leaders, impeach and remove the President from office. This is the only sane reaction to a group of armed men kidnapping and gunning down our neighbors in the street.

Reminder: the GOP DIDN'T HAVE the votes to fund DHS yesterday.

The only reason they got the funding was because these seven Democrats handed it to them on a silver platter.

This must be weird news to see if youโ€™re one of the literally hundreds or even thousands of university administrators who preemptively censored faculty, scrubbed websites, changed the names of centers, etc.

Recent Events Could Shift the Debate Over Who Should Run City Council The result is that when the council resumes deliberations this week, Peacock will have a much stronger case that it can mount an uncompromised response to the right-wing agenda Portlanders most fear.

โ€œI also believe in the power of a peopleโ€™s movement to effectively push back against authoritarian power, and I believe itโ€™s important to put that belief into action. That is where I choose to put my energy when fascism is at our doorstep.โ€

Waking up to the news that the US has bombed Venezuela, kidnapped its president, and will now seek to decide its fate (i.e. โ€œliberateโ€ its natural resources). We donโ€™t have money for basic infrastructure in our local communities, but we can always start new wars? Absolutely sickening.

Less visible homelessness in downtown Portland doesnโ€™t mean thereโ€™s less homelessness in Portland.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Councilor Mitch Greenโ€™s Statement on November 1st Camping Ban Enforcement
Policy
October 30, 2025
โ€œWe have seen ICE and the National Guard perform homeless sweeps in other cities where
they've been deployed, and weโ€™ve heard Trump calling for increased sweeps and even
disappearance of unhoused people.
It is a bad, cruel, and failed policy when the Trump administration does it, and it is a bad,
cruel, and failed policy when the city of Portland does it.
As we face the very real possibility of federal troops being deployed to our streets to target
one group of vulnerable people, we absolutely cannot start using our own police to do their
work for them by targeting another.
Some will argue that sweeps are about safety and compassion, but the evidence is clear
and overwhelming. Sweeps kill people.
For far too long, Portland has pursued a failed policy of criminalizing poverty. As a result,
weโ€™ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars only to see the problem grow, and deaths among
our homeless neighbors quadruple between 2019 and 2023.
Itโ€™s time to change direction. We need to protect ALL Portlanders.

We need to focus on programs that move people closer to housing and stability, not policies
that punish and further destabilize. Programs like low-barrier jobs programs, direct rental
assistance, food aid, and day shelters that provide hygiene, clothing, and case management.
Programs like these are humane, cost-effective, and they work. They address the issue of
visible poverty that neighbors and businesses are concerned about, but they do so by
offering dignity, not displacement. They break the cycle of disappointment and
depressionโ€”where people spend all day waiting in lines, worrying about their belongings,
with no meaningful work. They are a hand up, not a sweep away.
But at the end of the day, the only real, lasting solution to homelessness is to provide deeply
affordable housing for all. Unless we stop the flow of folks onto the streets, weโ€™re never
going to make real progress. That is why we need to move aggressively towards a Social
Housing modelโ€” high quality, permanently affordable housing that will serve the vast
majority of Portlanders, from the unhoused to the middle class.
The choice before us is clear. We can either align ourselves with the politics of division, of
sweeps, of cages, and of death, or we can choose the politics of solidarity, of housing, of
healthcare, and of life.โ€

I oppose the resumption of sweeps beginning tomorrow. They are costly, ineffective and cruel. At a time when our Federal government is literally starving our most vulnerable neighbors, we add to that by violently taking from them what little they have? My statement attached.

Portlanders will not be cowed by this administration. When undignitaries like Kristi Noem visit for their photo ops and get mocked by people in animal costumes itโ€™s because thatโ€™s the level of respect they deserve. Doing the work of mass deportation is the least honorable thing a person can do.
