18.03.2024 19:47 β π 4 π 5 π¬ 1 π 0There are several interlocking kinds of nerd who want this shirt, I know it:
10.02.2024 19:30 β π 88 π 34 π¬ 7 π 0Picture of a magazine with title text reading "Time Special Edition: Artificial Intelligence: A New Age Of Possibilities," an several topic headlines, all over top of an "AI"-generated image of human eyebrow and eye, and the eye has a circuit board for an iris; a fedex envelope and desk are visible beneath the magazine
Text from magazine interior, reading, "Bias in the System: AIs, like people, can absorb prejudices & exacerbate problems instead of solving them. In this Q&A, Damien P. Williams, an expert on social justice, explains the issues & what we can do to push back."
You're hiring an assistant or considering candidates for a grant, & you'd like to make the best choice possible, free of emotion or any hidden bias you might have-so you turn to AI for help. But not so fast! Generative AI, trained on the massive flow of human language & culture across the internet, has already absorbed our biases, including the unconscious ones. & while developers are working to purge racism, sexism, & disdain for the disabled from their language models, they have a lot of work ahead, especially when it comes to more nuanced forms of discrimination we cannot always perceive. In the Q&A that follows, Pamela Weintraub discusses the entrenched biases still laced through emerging AI with Damien Patrick Williams, a data scientist & philosopher at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His particular focus: How AI & algorithms affect the lived experiences of marginalized people, & how we can set things right.
So I can finally tell you about one of the things I've been being SUPER impatient about:
If you're out in the world and happen to see a magazine with the words "Time," "Special Edition," "Artificial Intelligence," & "A New Age Of Possibilities" on the cover, you uhhβ¦ might wanna give pg 28 a look π

-Big stretch! Drink some water and take your meds.

hello, good morning
i just witnessed someone use the acronym βbdsmβ to mean βbusiness development, sales, and marketingβ and i have never been so glad to have my camera off
Also, it is really frustrating how much people justify not giving painkillers to women. I recently had an IUD put in, and even though I had taken four ibuprofen beforehand as my obgyn recommended, it was so incredibly uncomfortable that I came home and told my partner that I am never giving birth.
12.12.2023 19:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is such a good and informative read. Thank you for writing it. I had no idea that when I heard about the horror of episiotomies that they had already severely dropped in practice.
12.12.2023 19:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0βBut the righteousness of the natural childbirth movementβs complaints about doctors can obscure the often essentialist assumptions about women that motivate its reasoning.β I wrote about the natural childbirth movement for @thenation.com: www.thenation.com/article/cult...
12.12.2023 13:47 β π 79 π 27 π¬ 12 π 3Hey I could really use the help right now. I'm overdraft, got a massive overdue phone bill, and I'm really low on dog food. I'm trying to stay positive but im really struggling. If you've ever wanted art from me, now is the time. I'll even do illustrations. These last few months have destroyed me
12.12.2023 18:56 β π 59 π 77 π¬ 4 π 0For about 30 years of my life, I answered the question of βwhat does future me need?β with βjust stop being such a fuck up!β
Once I started having compassion toward myself I was able to actually do things that were helpful.
It took me a very long time to understand that just because a condition is not always disabling does not mean that you are never dealing with a crushing disability.

You cannot provide a technological fix to what is ultimately a social problem. People behaving like assholes on your platform is a social problem that needs a social solution, not simply throwing more tech at it.
If you are not already aware that the little owl antennae are called βplumicornsβ I would like to be the one who shared that information with you.
16.11.2023 06:37 β π 3338 π 1184 π¬ 92 π 53I mean, there's a HUGE and important distinction between "this is racist and I wanted it to be" and "this is racist? That's not what I wanted!" but that distinction is not "so actually it's not racist at all you idiot, you moron"
16.11.2023 16:40 β π 37 π 5 π¬ 1 π 0I haven't listened to it yet and so I don't know how good it is, but I just saw on my podcast app that npr lifekit has an episode posted this week about quitting dating apps. Mentioning it in case you find it useful.
14.11.2023 19:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0NaNoWriMo doesn't have to be 50,000 words. The point is just to get you writing, and if that means you open up your draft every day and think about it a little, that can be your win!
Don't let huge goals dissuade you from smaller, attainable ones.

We're past the point where a milquetoast press release about company values means shit.
You do not need to be a Zionist to think that Israelis deserve peace, safety, human rights and dignity. You do not need to be an antiZionist to believe Palestinians deserve peace, safety, human rights and dignity.
