The reward for waking up early was a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Sunlight streamed down the bridge, seagulls flew in the distance, and my heart soared too.
This is how a San Francisco morning should begin.

05.07.2025 05:53 β π 37 π 7 π¬ 1 π 1What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelly to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisyβa thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices, more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour.

Side note: Carl Stokes was the first black mayor of a major U.S. city. He didnβt consider himself an environmentalist; he was focused on the needs of the urban poor. But he became an environmental justice pioneer by drawing attention to the impact of environmental problems on communities of color.

Today in history, 1969: The heavily polluted Cuyahoga River catches fire due to trapped debris and oil slicks, likely ignited by a passing train. It was not unusual, extinguished quickly and caused little damage, but it became a symbol for the Clean Water movement. /1
