South Tyneside Greens Urge North East Mayor To
Resist 50% Increase In Bus Fares!
Councillor David Francis, Leader of South Tyneside Green Group and councillor for Beacon and Bents ward, has sent a strong message to Labour's North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness, urging her to resist a 50% hike in bus fares set to hit residents at the end of the year.
The Β£2 fare cap, which has helped many locals cope with the cost-of-living crisis, is set to rise to Β£3 β€” an extra burden on South Tyneside's already struggling families.
Not only is this a financial hardship, but it's also a setback in the fight against climate change. With rising fares, fewer people may be able to afford public transport, undermining efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Other cities like Liverpool and Greater Manchester have managed to extend their lower fare caps. So why should South Tyneside be left behind?
David's letter to the Mayor calls for a fairer, greener solution: KEEP THE Β£2 FARE CAP.
We need to make public transport more affordable and accessible β€” for people and planet β€’
