We wrote a thing! But, perhaps more importantly, this @timeshighered.bsky.social article contains an exclusive on whether @alexhorne.bsky.social considers Jaffa Cakes to be cakes or biscuits... πŸ‘€

Thankfully in this case the colleague can walk the extra distance... Imagine the inconvenience if the more expensive station was the only accessible station?

It's just so bonkers isn't it?

Well done for looking after your colleagues by checking these things! That's very kind of you πŸ˜†

Special shout out here to @philjemmett.bsky.social who, every year, takes the winning trophy from the Champion of Champions Prize Task & makes it into the real trophy for the next year of the competition.

My wife to my daughter: "Do you want the book about scientists that daddy's friend wrote, or do you want the one about bums?"

My daughter: "Bums!"

I just searched for something that started with "How to make b..." and one of the suggestions was

How to make black coffee.

Isn't that obvious?

Option a) do it in the dark.
Option b) start with white coffee and take the milk out.

This trophy does look a bit like a star and a pineapple had a child.. I'm sure there's a CAD tool for that.

With @uni-of-warwick.bsky.social now having an account, a couple of us thought a Starter Pack of Warwick staff, doctoral students & postdocs might be helpful for those hopefully migrating here alongside the University.

Please post below if you work at Warwick & would like to be added.

The momentum stays up because the students are driving the content in their own direction. You'll have a nice easy time.

Try not to set prescriptive, single path tasks. Allow for more creative flow.

16.01.2025 13:19 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Instead, a task should have a starting point and some creative direction that allows people to play.

Investigate, explore, have fun.

The task can then have an end goal, some will get there fast - but then push further. Others won't be direct but play and with a nudge will head towards the goal.

16.01.2025 13:19 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

#outreach and #publicengagement: be creative.

If a task has one answer, the students who know how to work it out will, and then have nothing to do, while those who don't, won't, and then have nothing to do.

You'll have to drag the momentum back up. It's going to tire you out as a presenter!

Where possible, I try through #SchoolTasking to support talented independent creators.

Kimberley's work is one example, but we've also commissioned many crocheted & needle-felted Alex Hornes (details of these below) & rely to a huge extent on the 3D printing prowess of @philjemmett.bsky.social 🀩

Any other tips and ideas from you lovely folks?

07.01.2025 16:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Start with a box.

I raved about this years ago on the "before Bluesky" platform but you should start demo design with the box that it's going to go in and where it will be stored. If you can't store it safely and find it easily - the demo might as well already be broken. Think about the long term.

Don't do public engagement work for nothing.

Yes, it is fun. But it should be delivering something for you personally as well as for the audience and your company. How can you get visibility for the work you're doing? Photography? Websites? Social media? Press interest? Intranet/bulletins?

07.01.2025 16:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Nothing should be used once and forgotten.

Think about what other events or expositions you are doing and how you can use any content for both. Adults and children both like playing with toys while you talk.

07.01.2025 16:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Find something everyone enjoys talking about.

The best thing to do is chat about the topic until you all realise you're grinning and laughing - there's the central element of any public engagement resources you design!

It's easiest to find this with someone who is not an expert in the field.

This morning I was working with a company on how they can do #PublicEngagement work and heard the all-time classic "but our stuff isn't interesting".

It always is. It's always fascinating! Here's a couple of things I think are useful to keep in mind:
