Reading the exalted "Confucian" classics, one would not expect anything raunchy. Until you come to the #Shijing, where Mao quite clearly describes moral degeneration under Duke Xuan as people "throwing themselves at each other" and indulging in promiscuity. But it gets better:..

/4 The #Greek vessels thus apparently were mostly commercial prestige goods. Writing seems to have been used more for ceremonial purposes in ancient cultures, e.g. in bronzes from early #China or vessels from ancient #Egypt. The State Collection of Antiquities goes back to king Ludwig of #Bavaria.

/3 ...in case the elaborate iconography did not give away their identity. The names are written in different directions, to guide the observer to the figure in question. Later on, there were also maker's marks, with one artist even boasting the particular quality of his work!

Interestingly, the written word played a relatively minor role on Greek vessels, presumably because the artists often did not know how to write. As a result, writing was often applied ex post. Most writings identify the depicted figures (gods, heroes, etc.)...

The diary contains notes such as "When I went outside for a walk, sexual thoughts came back up. My wild depravity would not stop." (外出散步，色念復起，狂妄不息) or references to syphilis Chiang seemingly caught. /3

Taibao 太報 quotes an observer expressing he now feels weird about patriotic songs praising Chiang as a beacon of humanity, having now found out how pervy he was, calling the diary "A chronicle of someone losing the fight to control his urges". /2

A "hot" current debate in #Taiwan revolves around the diary of Chiang Kai-shek #蔣中正, which has been made available by the National Archive #國史館. (Its authenticity is disputed.) Interest in the diary peaked because it seemingly attests to insatiable horniness of the #ROC leader. /1

Oh, did I mention that the character is now used mostly as "to rape"? Not quite the slightly misogynistic yet humorous twang many seem to associate with 姦, after all...

This reminds me of the debate around the interpretation of female figurines by 19th-century archaeologists: definitely a fertility goddess! @ciaota.bsky.social: "She opens her mouth as if to smile", do you remember?

So many possibilities for this week! A common one is 姦. The joke is that the three "women" (女, notice the "broad hips") together mean gossip. Well, in Chinese at least, earlier character forms look nothing like this. More commonly, it is written 奸 in early imperial China. So...a woman and a cudgel.
