New research out in Social Inclusion by Vesna Holubek, @derek-ruez.bsky.social, Mila Bujić, Marisa Honkanen, and Zsuzsa Millei exploring the diverse experiences and agencies of international academics in the context of lived and managed university internationalization doi.org/10.17645/si....
As we say in the abstract, we hope the paper can help illuminate the 'complicated convergences and divergences between managerial attempts to increase the university’s global competitiveness and the diverse needs, positionalities, and agencies of international academics'.
I feel very lucky to have been a part of this excellent collaboration researching the experiences of international academics at Tampere University.

Tampere University friends:

An importat statement from Finland's Union of Research Professionals asking the Finnish government and immigration service to reconsider a legal interpretation that is preventing Palestinian passport holders from being able to apply/extend residence permits.
Horror after horror unfolds in Gaza, and Israeli politicians continually advertise their genocidal and ethnic cleansing intentions.
I've long supported the academic boycott of Israeli universities, but today seemed like a good day to reiterate: www.bdsmovement.net/academic-boy... #geosky #bds

Found a few minutes today to dip into this great collection of short, open access pieces on The promise of cultural geography, edited by @vickiezhang.bsky.social g.bsky.social and @benandersongeog.bsky.social. Definitely worth checking out! research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/publicati...
Mahmoud Khalil is free. May his release lead to the release of all who are detained and incarcerated from the US to Palestine, in ICE facilities and in prisons. And may his courage inspire us to remain steadfast in fighting for Palestinian liberation.
Furious that the Israeli state just continues to murder whomever it wants, whenever it wants, and the countries that have armed and funded that state do nothing to stop it.
I'm quoted in this piece about experiences of 'academic experts from abroad' in Finland. The quotes are a translation of a translation, but this one i liked: ”The two-faced approach of being friendly to ’international experts’ while making things worse for others is a moral and political failure.”
Excited to read Kahina Meziant's new paper, 'Glitches, geopoetics, and the matter of migration: Regrounding beyond citizenship' at @thegj.bsky.social: rgs-ibg.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
In a very short time, over 1600 researchers from Finnish universities and research organizations joined a petition calling on Finland to recognize the state of Palestine and do everything it can stop the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing.
Always interesting to learn more about how Finnish university international affairs staff are approaching internationalization at #kvkevätpäivät. Looking forward to our session tomorrow discussing @tieteentekijat.bsky.social's proposals for flexibile multilingualism in research and higher education.
"Why do faceless politicians have the power to strip human beings of their divine moments?”
Mahmoud Khalil shares a public letter to his 3 week old son, who he hasn't been allowed to meet because ICE is keeping him detained for his speech in support of Palestinian rights.
Strong and active presence of SPARG scholars in the historic one-day strike @ Tampere Uni

Ranjani Srinivasan, the Columbia grad student whose visa was revoked forcing a "self deportation", was scheduled to present their research at the AAG meeting next week. This is an outrageous attack on our colleague and on geographic thought. Share and sign the statement below.
Fresh out paper on ‘fitful infrastructures’ of survival in Gaza amid infrastructural elimination in Antipode by two GOCEP researchers, Khalid Dader and Mikko Joronen. @antipodeonline.bsky.social

Ripping a student from their home, challenging their immigration status, and detaining them solely based on political viewpoint will chill student speech and advocacy across campuses nationwide.
Political speech should never be a basis of punishment or lead to deportation.
For anyone around Tampere University, another exciting iteration of the Decentering the Global lecture series is in the works for April. Students can register to participate for course credit (5 ECTS).
Had the opportunity to co-write this paper on love, work, and the world with @ajsecor.bsky.social & @dcockayne.bsky.social.
It's been out for a few months already (in a great SI on Affect and Ideology, co-edited by @ajsecor.bsky.social & @benandersongeog.bsky.social), but wanted to share here.
