This is the first full episode since I joined @1autumnleaf.bsky.social as cohost of @breakingmath.bsky.social, it's w/ a math prof I've known and looked up to for 20 years, currently president of the AMS. This chat, about the meaning and future of math, left me feeling both informed and uplifted.

Math will increasingly be about asking the right questions, finding the right definitions, deciding which results are most important, and finding powerful applications.

Honestly, it’s always been about this, but the burden of technical work may lessen with AI—and that’s great news!

It’s amazing how many more people care about pure math research now that computers are doing it.

When my Robin Hood Math book came out last summer, my publicist at Penguin Random House landed me an episode on Breaking Math. That’s how I first met Autumn, who was solo hosting the show at the time. We instantly clicked and got along like we had known each other for years.

It’s been six years now. I’ve had the opportunity to write a pop math book with Riverhead, author over a dozen newspaper op-eds, do a handful of TV and radio appearances, chat with around a hundred journalists and a few congressional offices.

Then it occurred to me: why not share this with more people? Soon I had written a book on the topic. It was a synthesis of what I learned with my students, and it put me on the path I find myself on today:

I was by no means an expert, but I learned enough to give a sense of the algorithmic forces at play. This helped us process the deluge of information and misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

My students finished the semester from home and some said they discussed the class with their parents and siblings. One topic we covered was the role machine learning plays in the information ecosystem.

I envied my colleagues who pivoted to researching topics around the pandemic, but I didn’t know how they did it. Thankfully, my students helped me find something I could do: help the public understand what was going on.

I was teaching a seminar on truth, lies, and statistics when my university announced that all students were dismissed from campus to finish the semester on Zoom. This was late March 2020, the chaotic early days of COVID.
