Meanwhile the workers who survive are threatened and whipped into "doing less with more" and taking on the "entrepreneurial spirit" with no entrepreneurial ownership stake. Why aren't they moving even faster than before their numbers were reduced, executives demand to know?

But who is on top? The people inside those tech companies with the most merit in skill and ideas? Obviously not. In fact those people are frequently fired in the name of cost-cutting, because experienced skill costs more and cuts into C-suite bonuses and pay.

They took the idea of an internal "meritocracy" and extended it beyond the work they did into a kind of social darwinism. And it got so powerful it's now running the united states, with open talk of killing democracy and turning the country into a plutocracy disguised as a meritocracy.
