Ties knots can resemble each other with the right fabric/shaping. Try making a four-in-hand like this: www.youtube.com/shorts/m0iYP... Pinch/tug at the knot while tightening until it looks how you want it.
Heidegger's tie knot in FFVII Remake.
Heidegger's tie knot in FFVII Remake.
One more observation: Heidegger's tie knot is weird. It's as narrow/symmetrical as a Kelvin, but so 3D and tight it's nearly cylindrical. I'm not sure it resembles anything so much as a Simple knot that's been tripled or quadrupled, which I've never seen in practice. It must be uncomfortable.
13.08.2025 07:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Nunchaku's three-quarter portrait from Before Crisis. A young man with curly blond hair and blue eyes wearing a black suit and tie with a white shirt frowns at something off-screen. Over his shoulders is a pair of long, red, straight-sided nunchucks connected by a steel chain.
A comparison image of the Simple/Oriental and Four-in-Hand knots side-by-side, tied with the same tie. The first knot resembles a shorter, tighter version of the Turks' tie knots. The second is a narrower knot overall, with a more prominent and curving side on the wearer's right, giving it a slender, off-kilter look.
Back to my Nunchaku headcanon! I prefer him in the "schoolboy" knot, the four-in-hand. Not just because of his youth and irreverence (see: ใใฏ pronoun) but also because of the social class connotation.
It's a middle-class opinion that one should prefer symmetry over this charming, insouciant knot.
Why is this perfect characterisation? The Windsor was made to emulate upper-class dandies without using their methods. The Half Windsor is its junior business offshoot โ sleeker, less symmetrical, and not always self-releasing.
The Simple/Kelvin knots aren't self-releasing, either. Poetic? ๐ค โ๏ธ
It would be fitting if Rufus wears a Half Windsor, because his father wears a Full or even Triple Windsor. The latter are business magnate tie knots โ maximalist, dated, new money, and American (despite the name).
Time to bring back that derek guy thread: bsky.app/profile/diew...
Reeve's tie knot in FFVII Remake. It is the same knot as worn by the Turks, but Reeve's tie is made of a satin-like fabric and his tie knot is slightly looser. While his tie is more formal, he looks a little less put-together.
Rufus' tie knot in FFVII Rebirth. It is a firm, three-dimensional knot that angles slightly up to his right at the collar. It has more bulk in the upper half of the knot. The fabric is plain matte black.
Guess who wears the same tie knot as the Turks...? Reeve. He uses satin-like fabric, though; more formal, less durable, for a higher-status man with a desk job.
Guess who doesn't? Rufus. His tie is much more 3D, to suit the depth of his collars. It's also more top-heavy. My guess is a Half Windsor.
Rude's tie in FFVII Remake, with the pointed trefoil cross pattern clearly visible.
Tseng's tie in Crisis Core Reunion. While black-on-black, it has a complex patterned texture with circular elements and contrasting sheen threads.
Tseng's tie in FFVII Remake. It has a smaller, simpler repeating pattern that amounts to little more than a texture.
All the Turks' ties seem to have a bit of texture to them. Rude's is the most expressive, with a shiny, pointed trefoil cross pattern.
Meanwhile, Tseng changed tie fabric between Crisis Core Reunion and FFVII Remake โ seemingly opting for a more conservative look when taking on more responsibility.
Elena's tie in FFVII Rebirth.
Tseng's tie knot in FFVII Rebirth.
Rude's tie in FFVII Rebirth.
Cissnei's tie knot in Crisis Core Reunion. This time, the texturing and collar loop angle are visible on her tie. Hers is the only tie without a dimple.
If you want to steal their look (symmetrical, tall/narrow triangle, not too pinched, flat not cylindrical, not top-heavy in the bulk) I'd try a Kelvin tie knot.
Aim for a reasonably substantial, black-on-black textured fabric with enough width to give the second wrap its height.
As for texture...
(Side-note: The Kelvin knot gets confused with the Victoria knot even by menswear blogs/channels. Disregard any tutorial that doesn't start with the tie seam facing outward.)
Here's another view: www.youtube.com/shorts/3wVug...
Are they "actually" wearing this? I mean... it's a video game. But...
Fabric choices can make it larger and less pinched.
But, on second thoughts, I'd place my bets on the Turks wearing a variation known as the Kelvin Knot. (Extra twist pun intended!)
It's a Simple Knot that repeats the wrapping step for a subtly more imposing look: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOyx...
The "oriental" knot is small, quick, easy, & symmetrical. That means:
- practical/convenient
- modest/unassuming
- suitable for thick/textured fabrics
- suitable for tall/thin wearers
Not to be confused with the "easiest" knot, a four-in-hand.
Here's how you tie it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfOi...
Elena's tie knot in FFVII Rebirth. It is a simple knot in a textured fabric that gives the knot a little bulk.
Cissnei's tie knot in Crisis Core Reunion. It is narrower and longer-looking than the other Turks' tie knots; her tie is likely the same width but made of thinner fabric.
Tseng's tie knot in FFVII Remake. It is a simple knot in a textured fabric that gives the knot a little bulk.
Rude's tie knot in FFVII Remake. It is a simple tie knot in a thick, satin-esque tie bearing a pointed trefoil cross pattern.
Awrite lads, I learned after my garbled late-night tie-posting spree that I can't edit posts on Bsky ๐คฆ So here we are again!
When I said the Turks wear the "simple" knot, I meant the one widely known as the Oriental Knot, so named for its popularity in Asia, incl. Japan.
Or is there a twist...? ๐งต
I've had the silly mental image of someone putting a tie on new recruit Reno for the first time, and he instinctively tries to back out of it like a kitten in a new collar ๐ just NOPE
But hey, he could TOTALLY tie one. If he wanted to. He doesn't have to prove anything to you. <Reno sweating> ๐ฐ

11.08.2025 13:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Tseng's collar loop (the most visible of anyone's) also leaves the tie knot a little suspiciously low, imo... I'd put money on Rude's tie being real from the knot angle, but I can't help but wonder if Tseng's is false, made to drop like a gecko's tail if he gets caught by it. (Overthinking? ๐ฏ haha)

Something else I noticed while checking this, other than the individual fabrics (Tseng and Elena in the ReTrilogy make stodgier choices than Cissnei and Rude)...
Tseng switches for a more conservative tie fabric between Crisis Core Reunion and FFVII Remake. A reaction to having more responsibility?
If you want to know how to tie the knot they're wearing, it's just this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfOi... (I looked at too many references to arrive at this lol)
