Just got reminded of this quote, now it's gotta live on Bluesky
This might be the greatest split-screen ever broadcast.
They’ll play this in museums in future.

Don’t have much reach here but I’ve relaunched Brokentier’s web store, and made a little video to show off a few of the designs.

I feel like once somebody has learned a few fighting games to a respectable level, when you pick up a new game, you don't experience the early fun mashing phase and skip straight to angry face at the bottom of the curve (though with the benefit that your that much closer to best part at the end)
I guess the point I might be trying to make is that I don't think you have to sacrifice chasing mastery for online play to be a more positive experience. Making quick play the default mode is one way to accomplish this. Alternatively, I think a lot could be done to make ranked less awful
Though I guess your argument in your recent piece is that non-fighting games fill that "wind down at the end of the day" role better than fighting games can, and the unique long-term appeal of the FGs is getting to the end of that mastery curve
I know it's not a perfect comparison due to the team-based vs. 1v1 thing, but for a good while, the original Overwatch was my "have a beer after dinner and solo queue into quick play for an hour or two" game (maybe I'm a weirdo though?)
I'm legit curious to know; especially for non-FGs like the ones I mentioned, since they seems to make quick match (rather than ranked play) the 'default' experience. Anecdotally, when I played them years ago, almost everybody I knew never really played ranked
Are there publicly available stats out there for casual vs. ranked player counts for LoL, Overwatch, etc.? (genuinely asking)
I think you can keep the upside and dump the downside. Think quick match in the original Overwatch. You play a match -> win or lose, a bar goes up -> when it gets full, you get some cosmetics or sprays or whatever nonsense. You don't have to shove a rank in people's faces
please read this one if you've ever had any kind of opinion about fighting games, and especially if that "fgs are bad products" essay made you feel a way. it's probably the best thing pat's written up until now, and that's saying a lot. really goddamn good.
It's time to hunt the monsters in our realm.
"we are living through unprecedented times". bro these times have so much precedent. these are some of the most precedented times of all time.
I kept needing this, so I finally made it.
A reminder: if you want to support my work, buying my book is a great way to do that.
If you want to read a book about how to get into fighting games, buying my book is also a great way to do that, but if you don't have the $ you can just DL it for free.
"Why rollback and netplay events are good for locals, actually"
Last night I hosted a sweet locals session out of my garage and then after cleaning up I read one of the worst fighting game takes in recent memory, so here's my attempt to upcycle it.

everyone loved the tech industry's free music and friendship machines of 20-30 years ago. it's unclear what could be causing people to feel the opposite about the industry's new racism and insanity machine
"Letting go of Evo"
I wrote about why I'm breaking my Evo attendance streak (every year since 2011; first Evo was 2003). It's sad, but I think this a good opportunity to celebrate the Evo moments that got me here before moving on.
