At the start of February, Board Boosters started working on the #speedrun for Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS, a shmup for the Game Boy!
Our members have worked on run optimization and as a result, we've already knocked the easy mode world record down by about 35 seconds, bringing it to 14m 18s! Incredible!

Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS!
Suggested by @uccidarogue.bsky.social, this is a neat little #shmup for the Game Boy which uses interesting techniques to provide a smooth and intense shooter experience on this classic handheld.

A break from the recent BB history recap to mention that on Saturday, we're broadcasting our post-mortem discussion of the December target game!
We didn't officially run a game for Dec, but members of our community took it upon themselves to #speedrun Jazz Jackrabbit: Holiday Hare!
This was a fun little platformer! Although it was not quite as fast-paced as Dreamworld Pogie, it was still very easy to replay over and over thanks to its short run time and approachable mechanics!

Sitting at 10 runners with a record of 6m28s, this was already quite a refined run before the Boosters came along. That being said, after 8 of us started getting runs in, the original WR holder also participated and knocked 6 more seconds off of that record time! Very impressive!
In June 2024, Board Boosters targeted The Great Giana Sisters for the Amiga!
It's a side-scrolling platformer where you jump on enemies to kill them and gain powerups from hitting boxes! If that sounds familiar to you, its because this may or may not be very heavily "inspired" by Super Mario Bros.!
Unfortunately, Zeliard was our weakest showing as a group, partly due to the difficulty of getting a successful run, and partly due to members being busy at the time. However, it's still an interesting game worth checking out!

Only 2 Boosters were able to contribute to the Zeliard #speedrun, bringing the number of runs from 3 to 5, and reducing the WR by 4 seconds (to 31m 57s). This was specifically for the Any% DOS Mixed Speed leaderboard, which allows players to freely alter the game speed mid-run via an in-game toggle!
Our April 2024 boost was Zeliard for #DOS!
In this side-scrolling action #RPG, you level up and gain abilities on your quest to save the kingdom of Zeliard from evil. You must explore carefully in order to find and defeat the 8 bosses guarding jewels, which then allow you battle the demon Jashiin.
The requirement of returning to the entrance to leave a level after killing enough enemies made C7 interesting to route, and the blistering speed of the game and quick progression between levels made runs very fun to execute!

We made 2 categories: Any% and 40 Floors, the latter including 10 levels from an expansion to the base game. The Any% run ended up being very quick, with 12 people grinding the time down to 8m 58s! 40 Floors clocked in at 11m 57s.
Months later, the Any% WR was knocked down even further to 7m 41s!
Our first boost of 2024 was the #FPS title Corridor 7: Alien Invasion!
This game had NO recorded #speedrun or leaderboard before our involvement! Created using the Wolfenstein 3D engine, C7 tasks you with killing a certain percentage of aliens in each level before exiting at the starting elevator.
It was really hard to cut time off of this one, but our group had a lot of fun with this game, partly thanks to its goofy characters and dialogue and partly because it was just fun to route and play!

Originally standing at 18m 7s with 10 runners, the world record was dropped by only about 9 seconds during this boost. Of the 12 boosters that learned this game, it was TM, the original world record holder, who brought it down to 17m 58s after helping us with routing and item selection!
Board Boosters heated up December 2023 by #speedrunning The Ignition Factor for SNES!
In TIF, you control a team of firefighters as they save people trapped in burning buildings and smoky mines using many different tools and items. Careful control and proper item selection are key to this run!
The speedrun for Organ Trail rewards deep knowledge and understanding of the game's mechanics, as well as snappy decisions regarding resources...even if your run can just die from dysentery at a moment's notice!

The existing 7 runners had established a WR of 13m 57s, but once 12 of our boosters got their grubby hands on Organ Trail, we cut that time down to 11m 15s! This was thanks to several of our community members labbing stats, optimizing the route, and further understanding the various upgrades.
Our 3rd boost took place in October 2023, which means we picked a SPOOKY GAME!
Organ Trail: Director's Cut was our October #speedrun, in which you drive through various US cities to reach the west coast while budgeting groceries, upgrading your vehicle, and (of course) killing zombies.
Defenders of Dynatron City is strange and janky with a lot of collision detection issues that lead to some frustration. However, it's still an interesting and unique title that our community had a lot of fun learning and refining!

Originally with only 2 runs on the its speedboard, the world record sat around 15m 34s by our fellow member @bokonon-lives.bsky.social!
Route labbing and further understanding of game mechanics allowed us to bring that record down to 11m 49s, and the speedboard went from 2 submissions to 11!
In August 2023, our 2nd #speedrun target was the #NES title: Defenders of Dynatron City!
Developed by LucasFilm Games, DoDC has you select a team of 4 superheroes and use their various attributes and abilities to rid Dynatron City of the evil scientist Dr. Mayhem and his robotic army.
Though it's far from perfect, Dreamworld Pogie has been a favourite of our group thanks to its extremely accessible gameplay, quick platforming, and short run time allowing for (relatively) painless resets!

Prior to our involvement, Dreamworld Pogie's solitary Any% #speedrun was clocked at 13m 32s. June 2023 saw 14 Board Boosters reduce that record to 6m 29s, essentially cutting the WR in half! Activity continued on this game for a while, and there now 31 runs on the board with a WR of 6m 12s.
