It’s about not being given something you didn’t want from things that put you in anaphylactic shock to unsuspected intoxication… knowing what you are given and by who is part of self reliance

But also part of civic responsibility and radical self reliance means you ALSO have to respect consent. From food to intoxicants consent isn’t just about body autonomy

Radical Expression doesn’t get to override someone else’s right to exist, right to feel safe.

It balances Radical Inclusion with Civic Responsibility in things like the presence of hate speech and symbols. Because violating someone else’s safety isn’t responsible or inclusive.

So consent is the underlying foundation of every one of the 10 official principles

Remember 1) not everyone finds fun the same way, 2) what you hear about burningman is only a small percentage of what the event is. 50,000-70,000 people would not go to an event JUST for bragging rights. I’m sure there are a good couple hundred that do but not an entire large city worth.

Image: a hand drawn pocket watch with both the chain and the case on fire. Around the watch’s and chain are clockwise: a builders square, the eye of Horus, the burningman logo, a castle (a representation of a previous effigy our designer created, a hibiscus flower, a train engine (another former effigy from our designer) the right hand of our designer which is missing the index finger, a rocket (another of his previous effigies) a hot air balloon, the Venus of Willendorf, a Japanese symbol, a ship (another of his effigies) and an ank. There is a QR code that takes you directly to tickets.

This pirate ship hovers off the ground a full story to mimic the optical illusion of Fata Morgana which was the theme for that year.

This castle was built for “Games People Play” theme and included second and third floor look out decks, giant card decks, an RPG, giant dice, etc.

This Rocket ship built entirely of wood and covered in bark is 5x the height of the person standing next to it. It had 3 separate floors with a top floor look out deck on its other side.

AND there are kink camps that don’t allow intoxication at all because it’s bad for consent and injury. AND there are family theme camps that have nothing to do with sex, drugs or music. There are major art installations & art cars. And major volunteerism. Burning is a LOT more than a rave.

I feel like I heard about someone doing this at Burning Flipside many years ago. Not that it can’t be revisited. Flipside is one of many of us BM regionals around the world. It’s in Austin TX area.
