I’m travelling to Manchester for #LavLang31 today, to present a paper that is strikingly relevant right now. In two months, there are national elections in the Netherlands. On Thursday, I present my study on the representation of trans rights in the previous elections. A short teaser:

A graphical abstract for Figueroa 2024: it shows visually how linguistic input, whether spoken or signed, leads to successful language acquisition, BUT we then get culturally specified standardized tests which measure successful language acquisition as meeting a white norm: the language of racialized communities becomes pathologized, a parallel to deaf language use (see also, Henner and Robinson's Crip Linguistics)

Teaching my ling anthro students about language acquisition and socialization which means I get to to tap the sign for @meganfigueroa.bsky.social's amazing work on ideologies of language acquisition as linguistic racism

Trump plans to sign executive order making English the official language of the U.S. The U.S. has never had an official language, though many states have designated English.

Linguistic violence is part of the fascist project.

A screenshot of the University of Toronto Press Website for the journal Gender and Language. It lists three titles: "Cultivating trans linguistics: Creativity and contestation" by Cedar Brown, deandre miles-hercules, and Lal Zimman; "Interrogating the cisgender listening subject in the study of trans voices" by J Calder and Ariana Steele; and "Misgender or out yourself: Vulnerability in pronoun sharing practices" by Cedar Brown. A screenshot of the University of Toronto Press Website for the journal Gender and Language. It lists four titles: "‘But […] how can you call yourself not binary???’: Linguistic self-determination, gatekeeping and trans identities in the French-speaking context" by Jordan J. Tudisco; "
Claiming transgender identity: Contextualising linguistic tensions over the term transgender in Hong Kong" by Kimberly Tao; "
That /s/tiene tumbao: Chonga-fied sibilants and the disidentificatory sociophonetics of Miami Latinx drag" by Dozandri C. Mendoza, and "
Language ideologies, life-making and vitality in trans communities in the US South" by Archie Crowley.

It's a weird time to be doing very trans research, but I'm grateful to be in community with so many great scholars working on trans linguistics -- some gathered in the latest issue of Gender and Language: utppublishing.com/toc/gl/18/3

Is Singular They Old or New? – Demystifying Language Project Why are they/them pronouns easier for some people to use? The answer can tell us a lot about the English language, and how it is changing.

in case you missed it, my piece for the Demystifying Language Project is up: Is singular they old or new? #linguistics

An image of 6 homemade, hand-drawn magnets. Magnet 1 shows a picture of a bottle with a label that reads "Prescriptivism repellent." Magnet 2 shows a drawing of a bored cat and reads "Sounds prescriptivist, but okay." Magnet 3 is a picture of a bottle of jam, with a label on the drawing reading "Sociolinguistics is my jam." Magnet 4 is written like a dictionary definition. It reads: "Sociolinguistics (noun) 1. Like normal linguistics, but cooler." Magnet 5 reads: "How many sociolinguists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" Followed by a small drawing of a light bulb and the words "It varies." Magnet 6 shows this text: "Miss Ms Mrs Prof Dr, ACTUALLY"

A student stayed after class to give me the most amazing gift basket of homemade goodies, including these magnets. I LOVE them. We could totally sell these as merch at NWAV, Sociolinguistics Symposium, etc.

A flyer with a pastel rainbow background and a small progress pride flag in each corner. At the top, in large white letters with a pink border, it says Call for LGBTQIA+ Survey Participants! The body of the flyer says, If you meet the following requirements, please consider taking my five minute survey on queer identity terms. No identifying information will be collected, and your responses will inform my MA thesis research in language, gender, and sexuality at Michigan State University. You must be 18 +, a native speaker of American English, and identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community! Scan here or visit this link to take the survey! A picture of a QR code and the link follow. At the bottom, it say Questions? Contact survey creator Emily Duggan at: duggane1@msu.edu.

If you're...
1) 18 or older,
2) native speaker of American English, &
3) a member of the LGBTQIA+ community (broadly construed),

take a few minutes to do Emily Duggan's MA thesis survey on the social meanings of queer identity terms! (shared on her request)
