Not quite free, but in ATL, dogs are $2, pizza is $3, and you can get a beer for under $10.

Historian, Dad. Go Bills! Go Sabres! BVB, Arminia Bielefeld, Go Gophers! Go T'Wolves!

13.08.2025 20:06 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The crazy thing about the whole semester is they couldnโt get mad at me and accuse me of teaching โanti-Americanโ topics because these are all things they are adamant about including and discussing. (5/5)
13.08.2025 17:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The most awkward part of that class (a survey) was the Jackson Era. As he was building up to tariffs, we discussed the Tariff of Abominations. That, combined with the political cartoon of Jackson as king, led to many more awkward moments in class. (4/x)
13.08.2025 17:11 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Again, they could talk in the abstract about the arguments of each individual one I assigned, but many got uncomfortable when they connected it to today. I didnโt need to guide them or lead them in this case - a couple of students immediately made the connection and were quick to point it out (3/x)
13.08.2025 17:05 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I teach in a region that is heavily MAGA, so this was clearly difficult for some of the class. Many view themselves as patriots, and were clearly uncomfortable with the whole discussion. That discomfort grew exponentially when we started talking about the Federalist Papers (2/x)
13.08.2025 17:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It is very clear the founders initially wanted a weak federal govt. When you ask why students will quickly say because they didnโt want another king. Last semester he was posting King memes at the same time we were discussing this in class. (1/x)
13.08.2025 16:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Just reading and discussing the Articles of Confederation last semester was really weird and awkward.
13.08.2025 16:29 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'm pretty sure I still have an entire set of these from when I was a kid. This was an era where they would make cards for anything, and then 1 yr later entire boxes would end up in the $1 store. I also had multiple boxes of Yo! MTV Raps cards from the same era.

12.08.2025 16:25 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Or the classic "MASSIVE DEFEAT: Need input not money" subject line in the email from Nancy Pelosi.
11.08.2025 20:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I have a colleague who had a student do that during class - sat in the back corner thinking no one would notice. I just can't imagine what would possess one to do that.
11.08.2025 00:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I second this.
10.08.2025 04:06 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A friend of mine teaches at Wyo and he's sent me a couple of pictures from the school bookstore. It's almost like they have a Josh Allen/Bills section within the Cowboy fanshop.
09.08.2025 18:05 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Do you have any thoughts on Uli Hesse's book about Bayern? I really don't have any great desire to read about Bayern, but the book looks good.
08.08.2025 20:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A very mistaken list of the last 12 presidents of the United States and their years in office produced by the Ph.D level scholar known as ChatGPT-5. Includes John F. Katwady, president 1991-1968; George W. bush, president 220Z-1999), and Bill Christen, president 1999-2001
I've seen this on Bluesky and had to try it myself. The image below was the response to the prompt: "Show me a diagram of the US presidents since Herbert Hoover, with their names and years in office under their photos" Bravo, OpenAI, bravo.

08.08.2025 19:05 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Back when I lived in Berlin, I went to a game at the Friedrich Jahn Sportpark. I didnโt realize the full significance of that field until I read Scheisse.
08.08.2025 18:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yes to both, and both books were amazing. I also read a history of St Pauli, but I didnโt like the style of that one.
08.08.2025 18:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think I just found my next book. I read the recent histories of Union and BVB earlier this year, this looks like the perfect follow up.

05.08.2025 22:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I was going to say - they did this like ten years ago and it was a debacle. I was really shocked to see they were going to return to it this year.
