In a functional democracy media can ask elected representatives questions about their decisions and they not only answer them, they understand they are expected to . I've observed that people from most fields who know what they're talking about appreciate real questions.

New Orleans remembers Katrina through theater and Hip hop As the city remembers the events of 20 years ago, memories are being preserved and history is being honored through art, storytelling and Hip hop.

One thing Trombone Shorty said to me on this reporting trip that will stay with me is that people in NOLA will find a way to find joy even in sadness. This hip hop theatre event by local playwright Anthony Bean, being performed Saturday, is a testament to that

Redirecting...

It may sound strange but it's true : sometimes when you're immersed in one story--as we are here in NOLA reporting on the 20th anniversary of Katrina--you honestly don't hear about another for a time, so the horrible news of the school shooting in MN was slow to reach us. We're getting up to speed

Wherever I go I try to find the historical markers . They tell you a lot, not just about events of the past but who is empowered to claim the story and the space in the present.
