To improve the drainage of heavy clay soil and make it easier to work, dig in coarse, gritty material. Sharp sand is ideal for this purpose. It can be obtained in bulk from builders' merchants, but do not use ordinary soft sand, as it is too fine and will not achieve the desired effect.
