the weird disconnect between watching everyone filter a late-2000s depiction of Africa through a 2020s semi-corrective lens and knowing that'll be partially ignored to thirst over Sheva already has me thinking "during Black History month, Capcom?!" for the rest of the year

Ehh maybe, though the Republican Revolution of 1994 was what really caused the Democrats to be less ambitious overall.

A lot of folks don’t want to accept that they kind of sound like this when speaking about the violence and death that marginalized folks have experienced in America

That they were preaching it wasn’t that serious, it was all personal choice…until…

Age verification?

In my day floppy disks where the big disks that where floppy and the small hard non floppy disks where diskettes. To use them we had to learn basic coding and more often than not there would be half a dozen disks to install one game

Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults.

Hey folks –

I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news.

I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults.

And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.)

Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence.

Anyway, we’ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what we’re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details.

And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. We’re definitely reading it!

Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)

I know we're all mad about ICE/DHS but we also need to be mad about RFK Jr.

He's killing -- and is setting the stage to kill -- waaaaay more people than DHS does, it's just that it happens quietly and in people's homes. Vaccine recommendations matter. Lying under oath matters.

IMPEACH RFK JR

I guess I should add that it's GOOD these guys are trying to retcon with the NYT's help, even if you shouldn't believe that it's driven by any real honest introspection. It means the delicate alliances that propped up this deadly kakistocracy are fracturing and they know shame is returning.

09.02.2026 19:24 β€” πŸ‘ 435    πŸ” 44    πŸ’¬ 6    πŸ“Œ 0

you're going to see a LOT of this sort of retconning (I was always on the right side of history) by all the very loud people who were on the wrong side of history. Especially as Trump's health fails. we need a big tent to dismantle fascism, but a little accountability might be nice as a treat

09.02.2026 19:15 β€” πŸ‘ 594    πŸ” 57    πŸ’¬ 6    πŸ“Œ 2

these guys are kind of different from the couch-locked Ron Paul fan slanket wearing libertarian keyboard champion types, who are in a different but less destructive strain mostly fixated on weed, greed, and crypto. though there can be overlap. Most of them helped enable trumpism too.

09.02.2026 18:16 β€” πŸ‘ 589    πŸ” 29    πŸ’¬ 9    πŸ“Œ 0

again I know a lot of them, and unless I missed it, I've yet to see a single one of these free market think tank knobs face ANY meaningful reputational impact whatsoever in the Loper Bright, Supreme Court-driven, corruption free for all their policy proposals directly enabled

09.02.2026 18:12 β€” πŸ‘ 702    πŸ” 52    πŸ’¬ 5    πŸ“Œ 0

A lot of these free market libertarians in the last year or DID shift some of their attention to combatting Trump's attacks on free speech. But they want to pretend they didn't play a starring role in paving the way for the total destruction of the federal regulatory state by autocratic zealots

09.02.2026 18:11 β€” πŸ‘ 860    πŸ” 63    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 2

most of these "libertarian free market think tankers" were paid covertly under the table by America's shittiest companies to argue for ZERO functional oversight of corporate power, then when the corpses, rampant fraud, and mass suffering appear, they're just completely intellectually fucking absent

09.02.2026 18:09 β€” πŸ‘ 1191    πŸ” 108    πŸ’¬ 6    πŸ“Œ 1

I know these people intimately. I've been engaged in bickering with them for the better part of an adult life. Primarily because they repeatedly insisted, using fake pseudo-academic cack, that no oversight of telecom monopolies would result in vast, utopian outcomes

this is a subject that's near and dear to my heart

1. no you didn't, you retconning fucks

2. your decades of anti-governance "free market" "government never functions" propaganda paved the way for the complete authoritarian decimation of labor, consumer, environmental protections

β€œorders the military to seize ballot boxes” is even more load-bearing; there are more than 116,000 polling locations in the united states, more ballot drop offs, and two states are mail-first, that’s an enormous logistical effort

like the Yoon Coup was a dead-ass high school clique that had gotten brain rotted by youtuber videos that decided to try to make the plot of Red Phoenix real, this white house has even dumber and less qualified people

i think we are likely to see some chance of Stop the Steal version of the Yoon Coup in a country without martial law or a centralized election administration, that is also run by whoever left in the Admin

I get that they feel the need to shovel money into capex and now desperately need some offsetting revenue source but even as a pure business decision this seems wrong to me, for the same reason shoving ads into Microsoft Word is wrong. are you building a Serious Work Product or not?

Back on Twitter before it became a weird child-diddler app, I noted how Mars lacks the kind of atmosphere necessary to REPEL the deadly solar radiation we take for granted here on Earth. Then alot of Musk fans made every attempt to be the most annoying creature on my post just to say I was wrong.

I almost didn't even recognize this as your artwork at first πŸ˜…

I love the idea that Max and Roxanne attended different colleges, explaining the latter's absense in canon. I see way too many fanworks that kinda just roll with the breakup so it's nice you provided a reasonable explanation.

I know we likely may never see an official sequel that shows Max & Roxanne back together, but in my heart, there is no future where they don't end up having their Happy Ever After.

I'd love to draw more of them, if I have time. Whitney and I hope you like them! #AGoofyMovie
