Texas dems fled the state.

At the start of a contentious, hours-long hearing in the Texas House of Representatives to debate the new, GOP-drawn congressional map, Rep. Jon Rosenthal (D) had a pointed question for Rep. Cody Vasut (R), the chair of the House redistricting committee. “My question is, does the leadership of the state truly think that the constituents, the people of Texas, are that stupid?” Rosenthal asked Vasut. Vasut never answered the question.

ICYMI: The Nat'l Association of Secretaries of States confirmed to me yesterday that they've been in touch with DOJ, who told them they plan to contact all 50 states about compliance with fed voting laws. Unclear if that also means requests for voter data.

NEW: Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) told Trump's DOJ to “go jump in the Gulf of Maine” to “cool down” in a defiant response to the wide-ranging request from the Justice Department for the state’s sensitive voter information and voting systems data.

Correction: Bellows told Trump's DOJ to go jump in the Gulf of Maine.

Full quote: “The Gulf of Maine is awfully cold, but maybe that’s what the DOJ needs to cool down. So, here’s my answer to Trump’s DOJ today: go jump in the Gulf of Maine.”

Notably, Bellows said that she heard that all 50 Secretaries of States' offices received some sort of correspondence from the DOJ about obtaining voting data. Will try to independently verify this, but if true, that is... something.

Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) fires back to Murphy's statement: "Dr. Murphy just said that he was OK with a citizen not being allowed to vote, if it prevented somebody who wasn't eligible to vote from voting... the Constitution is pretty clear on the matter, the right to vote shall not be denied."

Kind of a shocking statement from Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC) to Heling, the NC voter who was disenfranchised: "It's much worse if we have somebody voting who shouldn't than somebody, sadly enough, going through what you did."
