I lived in Austin 2000-2017. It was the warmest, funniest, friendliest town in Texas, from my experience, until around 2010. At that point, transplants from tech areas began arriving the vibe went way off. "Keep Austin Weird" while they killed the things that were weird and fun.

I tend to split the difference. I write through to the end of an "act" (longfic: 4-5 chapters; one-shot: ~3k words), then edit, then write the next act, then edit full MS to that point, then write next act... Sometimes, that editing helps me solidify/be aware something in the next act.
