Ní raibh siad in ann, hence the glove. Ach fós, níl siad in ann.

Oh you don’t want to know but every 2 years a group of engineers would “invent” a glove that had like the ASL alphabet programmed into it so you could fingerspell and then tell you they had solved barriers between sign language users and non sign language users.

“I’m solving communication problems for deaf people using AI” is the new “sign language glove” but worse.

Ah I’m so sorry Linda. We lost our girl late last year and it’s so devastating.

Exactly it’s very “One weird hack!” and it’s like 90 years of investment into maternity services, infrastructure, education, paid parental leave, accessible childcare and a good work life balance.

I had a thread on The Other Place about this when I was freshly postpartum but basically giving people a box and saying “good luck” without the Finnish supports (Neuvola is the jewel in the crown of Finland, I will fight anyone who says to the contrary) is wholly missing the point of the box

Because it’s in the news again I need ye to know that the Finnish baby box is just a very nice perk in a system designed to take excellent care of pregnant people, their partners and babies. The box is a nice thing but it’s the system that is the real gift!

Can they get your man Ralph Fiennes to do the Lisa Barlow Hot Mic Monologue for New Years Eve in New York this year please

This is it? And every time you wash your stinky acrylic cardigan, it’s shedding and degrading and releasing microplastics? Looking at you, Dunnes Stores!

Oh it’s chronic. There is a special place in hell for “wool blend” and it’s like 75% acrylic, 20% polyester and then 5% wool but it’s priced like it’s actually fully wool?! Jail!

High end brands are scammers, I see your little unfinished seams and your shoddy overlocking and your shitty fabric

No actually I don’t think I’ll be spending 70 quid on 100% polyester pyjamas are you for real lads

My emigration had absolutely nothing to do with asylum seekers and a whole lot to do with Fianna Fáil, I can tell you that for nothing.

Imagine being Irish and being anti immigration??? Make it make sense! How’s your uncle getting on there in Sydney? How’s your nephew doing in Dubai? I heard the American cousins were over for a visit last month?

Once again, if you believe that FF&FG would only love to give us a well-resourced, world beating welfare state but it’s just those pesky immigrants won’t let them, you are a gobshite. You have a loyalty card with your local bridge salesman. You were, in fact, born yesterday.

The presumptive next leader of Fianna Fáil would like to do some cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment to asylum seekers and he’s mad that the ECHR is pretty steadfast in saying cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment is bad.

Saying that the European Convention on Human Rights has gone too far is like saying that seat belts have gone too far. Because really, seat belts are non invasive, a minor thing, something you hardly notice. That is, of course, until things get really bad. Then you’re really glad about the seat belt

Tá siadsan againn ach as Sualainnise! Is léir go raibh siad ag m’fhear chéile nuair a bhí sé óg agus táid ag mo mhaicín anois. Ní raibh fhois agam go raibh leagan Gaeilge ann

With every failed attempt to stop people groping the Molly Malone statue, we move closer to electrifying her, which is a social good

View of ‘Pretty Words on a Page’: Disappointment in Sign Language Laws in Ireland, Finland and the UK

This paper I wrote was published at the weekend. It documents some of the disappointed felt by deaf people after the passing of sign language recognition laws in Ireland, Finland and the UK. journal.iraal.ie/index.php/te...

It’s so wonderful to see that change is possible when you’re still in the trenches of bringing home your own coffee because otherwise you’re drinking instant Maxwell House that’s been in the back of the press since there was a Mary in the Áras.

I’m fascinated in the concept of a literal language being trendy or en vogue. Like what? Irish become popular because of X so you dedicate like 2, 6, 8, 14 years to learning it? By the very nature of trends, you’ve surely missed the boat?

Mise, ag scríobh i nuachtán i 1899 “Tá cinneal gluaiseacht athbheochana ar súil leis an nGaeilge anois. Irish is so in right now?”

“Irish is having such a resurgence right now” a scríobhann Béarleoir eile, don mhíliú uair ar feadh 10 mbliana nuair a chasann sé ar duine atá beo ag úsáid an Ghaeilge amach sa saol.
