On this #WorldOceanDay, I am re-reading my piece for the BBC written on the first UN World Ocean Day in 2009. Then, I reported 0.65% of the ocean was protected. Today 8.3% is protected. But how long to reach the 30% target?!

Newly Identified IMMAs Spotlight Critical Whale and Marine Mammal Habitats in the Northwest Atlantic and Caribbean This month, the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force (MMPATF) led the mapping and approval of 43 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and Wider Caribbean....

Aerial humpback #whales off #Bermuda were stars of the 43 IMMAs at the 11th IMMA Workshop, focussing our efforts the past year on the NW Atlantic Ocean & Wider Caribbean. IUCN story published today outlines the results.

New Important Marine Mammal Areas spotlight whale habitats needing… ORCA protects whales and dolphins in waters around the world

This IMMA is in serious danger: the Kerch Strait & Taman Bay IMMA has suffered a heavy #oilspill of 2,400 tonnes due to Dec. 15 storm when one taker sank & another ran aground. 61 unique threatened Black Sea #porpoises & #dolphins found dead, 32 due to the spill. Clean-up efforts are underway....
