People who grew up with food insecurity can have a hard time unlearning maladaptive practices. Using SNAP as a bargaining tool is unconscionable and cruel. If you have a food bank, panty, or communal fridge do what you can to help out. Food insecurity affects more people than you think.

Fast forward to when I worked in athletic promotions and found out a bunch of athletes only ate at practice because they couldnt work per NCAA rules and were broke. I helped them get stamps and got the team chef to teach them how to cook on a budget. A lot of them were embarrassed. I was mad.

When I was a kid there were a few times where my family were on food stamps because sometimes there just wasnt any work or the union was striking. it was embarassing to have food stamps but my parents taught me not to be ashamed to ask for help when needed. They paid it forward when they could too.

The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.
