Mary, a Cotswold ewe. She is looking at the camera, but you can't really tell, because her long, curly wool has grown down over her eyes. She'll be getting her annual haircut in a few weeks. Bastila, a black Icelandic ewe, makes a funny face with her mouth open while I scratch her cheek. My hand in the long, shiny, white wool of one of my sheep, a ewe named Lester. My flock of sheep, standing in the pasture, waiting for me to bring their breakfast. The sky is blue, and the trees are bare, but all the snow has finally melted, so it looks like spring.

Our shearing date is April 7. If you're in the neighborhood and want to come help, lmk. :-)

The gang was up for scritches at breakfast today.

Yes, exactly. :-) some folks do this process by eye, without the helper rod, but I think that's harder.
This project is plain weave, so just one heddle rod. Next will be a 2/1 twill, so a different heddling process with two rods (plus helper rods during heddle making).

An illustration of the way people were packed into an enslavement ship sure The Middle Passage, 1749. 2026 ICE detention camp layout looks similar, but at a much larger scale.

A closeup image with text notes explaining some of the process of making the knotted heddles on the warp-weighted loom.

In the picture, I am holding the next warp I will make a heddle around. In the foreground, part of the heddle rod can be seen, with the first few heddles on it.

The wooden rod at the back of the warps is called a "helper rod". It is tied at the back of the warps as a way to create heddles of uniform length, and is removed at the end of the heddling process.

The heddle yarn (a little darker and smoother than the warps) takes a path that goes to the right of the warp yarn over the top of the helper rod, then diagonally across the back of the helper, and comes out on the bottom of the helper, on the left side of the warp, capturing it in a heddle. The heddle is secured to the heddle rod with a buttonhole-with-a-twist stich/knot. The next warp at the front is pushed over without a heddle, and the next warp in the sequence at the back is located. Repeat until all the heddles are done!

I also add a buttonhole twist to just the heddle rod between each heddle, which helps keep things from sliding around during the weaving process.

Making the heddles I'd definitely the most challenging part of learning how to set up a warp-weighted loom (based on how many of my students struggle with this step).

Making multiple heddles on a heddle rod permits the weaver to lift many warps simultaneously, and represented a big technological leap from earlier cloth-making processes which manipulate warps one at a time with fingers (as in twining).

This is the longest alt text I have ever written. If you got this far - wow! You are amazing and should probably just take my workshop on the warp-weighted loom someday. πŸ˜€

Here's a detail. The heddle string passes *diagonally* behind the helper rod, i.e., over the top right side of helper rod, comes out on bottom left, capturing the warp. Each heddle secured to heddle rod with a type of buttonhole stich. More deets in alt text. :-)

A warp-weighted loom set up for making knitted/knotted heddles. A detail of the heddle rod with the first few heddles on it. In this picture, I have isolated the warp I need to make a heddle for. At the lower right is the net-making shuttle holding my supply of heddle string. Luna the cat sitting in a pile of warp yarn and loom weights.

View of a warp-weighted loom being set up for weaving. Light catches the warp threads, which are held under tension with stone and ceramic weights. A closeup view of my hand at the top of the warp, where the starting border is lashed to an apron rod.

All the weights are hung, and both front and back spacing chains are done. I'll make heddles tomorrow when the light is better and my eyeballs are fresh.

A sizeable pile of skeins of handspun wool singles, almost none of them marked. They are varying shades of natural white, gray, and brown. Is there enough of one batch at the right weight to make the warp I need to produce?? I have no idea. If I had a yarn scale, it would help, but I don't.

I really, really wish I had a yarn scale this morning.

A group of warps worked in the starting border. A bit hard to see, but this is the warping setup. Two tabekt at top for the starting border, the starting border in a loop around 2 vertical pegs, bundles of completed warps at bottom (some covered by the blue cloth), and my warp yarn supply (on 2 cones), sloping out of frame at lower left. A view of the loom in warp-making mode. This sample is only a few yards long. A longer warp could be made by adding more pegs to the loom's uprights.

Making the warp - some details.

They can be. In this case, it's the way you create the warps' sett and thread order. The warps are long loops pulled through the shed of the tablets (or a rigid heddle). When complete, it's a starting border that's sewn to the warp beam.

One of four pictures of my process making a warp for a canvas weave on the warp-weighted loom. A card-woven starting border, and the hanging bundles of completed warps. In this second image, the completed warp and starting border is laid on the floor in front of the loom. A closeup view of the starting border and warp lashed to a secondary rod and suspended from the warp beam. A view of thefull loom with the warp attached. The next step is to begin attaching loom weights.
