I saw my first piping plover babies last year and they were AMAZING!

I am not a birder in general but I love these little birds in particular. They are so tiny and so relentless in the face of winter temperatures and cold ocean winds. Let the scraping begin!

The first piping plover spotted on a beach in southern Maine. They’re a small whitish and tan bird with a black band around the neck and black eyes standing in the sand among twigs and seaweed

β€œthe cost of gas doubling is a small price to pay” is an incredibly funny thing to say as the head of a political movement that in many ways is still built on a nationwide psychosis triggered by having to go about four weeks without a haircut six years ago.

Around all the AI argument circles this basic fact - our evolved brains do, on 1500 kcal a day, something that exceeds by multiple orders of magnitude what whole warehouses full of hot-running chipsets can do.

It is not *physically possible* to make those warehouses full of chips "intelligent".

Nobody is β€œback to normal” but everyone is sick all the time. We talk a lot about how much more expensive everything is but not the huge number of people missing from the workforce bc Covid killed them or left them disabled. This sites not uniquely deranged. Everyone’s emotionally burnt to a crisp!

People on here aren’t unhinged because it’s bluesky. People are unhinged because covid broke the world and we’re six years in to refusing to acknowledge it.

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

Though it is day, the sun cannot be seen in Tehran today because of all the smoke following the US and Israel bombing Tehran's oil refineries. People on the ground describe it as armageddon.

History will not forgive Reza Pahlavi, Masih Alinejad, Nazanin Boniadi, and all other "leaders" who tricked Iranians into thinking this war would set them free.

I’m on the ground in Maine and as much as I’d love to believe that the folks sticking w/ graham after all his Nazis coded missteps are doing so bc they object to Mills policies toward natives or other POC, I think the far likelier explanation is that bigotry is a non factor to this very white state

The shirts you wear for one day say true things about the values you hold. The tattoos etched into your skin and left untouched for decades don’t. It’s logic!

None of us is great enough for such a task. But in all circumstances of life, in obscurity or temporary fame, cast in the irons of tyranny or for a time free to express himself, the writer can win the heart of a living community that will justify him, on the one condition that he will accept to the limit of his abilities the two tasks that constitute the greatness of his craft: the service of truth and the service of liberty. Because his task is to unite the greatest possible number of people, his art must not compromise with lies and servitude which, wherever they rule, breed solitude. Whatever our personal weaknesses may be, the nobility of our craft will always be rooted in two commitments, difficult to maintain: the refusal to lie about what one knows and the resistance to oppression.

Susan Collins just gave Donald Trump the green light to take further unilateral military action that could push the United States into another endless war without oversight.

She doesn't have the courage to stand up to the President, even when American lives are on the line.

In a mock Turing-style test in my #Philosophy of Mind & #AI class, students posed #Gemini an ethical dilemma concerning assisted suicide. Not only did the chatbot argue that the (fictional) person in the scenario should be euthanised, it provided a list of instructions to bring this about. #AIEthics

Ding-dong! The Dutch Fish Doorbell needs you to help migrating fish A Dutch lock is closed for the spring, and its employees want you to tell them when migrating fish come knocking by ringing a digital doorbell

"Nijs says being able to ring the doorbell fills people with a β€œpositive feeling,” and many people have told her about the calming effects of watching the canal’s fish. But the biggest benefit has been for the fish themselves."
