on the cover, Damen and Laurent face opposite directions, showcasing their disconnect, yet both remain inside the cage-like window space: laurent on a red fabric, and damen, reduced to his new position on the ground. The regent's red curtain frames them, and on the stained glass, two birds dream of soaring in the sky. Damen is mostly in the shadows, the light on his back only a memory, while Laurent, while still under the light, has the inevitable looming shadow of his elaborate cage over him. Though Laurent holds Damen's golden leash, the chain silently binds him, too. Framing them, the star banner is covered in the regent's red: Tattered on the right, a crumbling memento of Laurent's father and brother, and on the left, a new banner, Laurent's own, still waiting for his time to be in the light.

On the back cover, a bloody scene; a testament of what happened to damen and his guard: the statue, inspired by a sophocles reading of laoconte, representing damen with his head broken off as a symbol of his position being striped off him, by his own brother, for having fallen in love with the wrong person, and his guard brutally murdered, all traces of him and the truth erased for the people of Akielos. In the background, the frieze foreshadows Damen's return, a tale to be told in the coming books.

on the cover, Damen and Laurent (with longer hair due to their journey) face the same direction, their goals finally starting to allign. On each side, swords and war maps dictate the path ahead while both are lost in a now-common, yet borderline special ceremony between them; the undressing of laurent, either of his clothes or his emotional armor against damen, while damen gets lost in the action, a representation of his slow, newfound appreciation for Laurent as the individual he comes to know. Instead of a cage, their shared tent: a fragile construction between them. All that separates them from the fire and freedom is a delicate veil now. On the table, a glass of wine sits alone, a representation of their tentative intimacy in this moment of their relationship. On the table, a war game: laurent's few numbers against the regent, but behind him, a secret backup none yet know about.

On the back cover, the very end of the book: Jord watches as Nikandros, Damen's loyal friend and Laurent's secret weapon, come to keep his end of their agreement. Laurent's star shine under the sun on both the standard and the shield: not all is lost.

On the cover, Laurent and Damen during the okton - both in the light, their flags sitting together covering each other's back. An activity where they both compete for their own glory, but finally face it as kings, here doubling as a representation of their last stretch towards their common goal: a fierce struggle where the earth rises, but does so under their power and speed; if it might get out of their control at times, it is something they will face side by side as equals. In front of them, Pallas has his own fun during the event moments before the unexpected happens. Behind them all, near the two thrones, Nikandros and Makedon carefully watch both kings.

On the back cover, all embark on an dangerous and exciting mission through slim odds and the watchful gaze of guards, but on the corner, a vision of the future: the blue bird (Laurent), finally free of it's golden cage, leaves the regent red covers behind and perks on the lion's (Damen) head to watch over them in this adventure on their new kingdom as a new spring rapidly blooms around them under the bright sky.

On the cover, Damen and Laurent's coronation. People of the two nations mingle while Charls the merchant is shocked at Lamen's audacity of dressing as the King. Laurent and Damen, though at the moment of Damen's introduction to Charls, are momentarily lost in their own little world.

On the back cover, Berenger concludes that Luxury does suit Ancel. While ancel is covered in priceless emeralds and surrounded in expensive furniture, flower petals still cover his space: a soft reminder of Berenger's more humble showcase of his feelings. On their suitcase a horseshoe is wrapped around by a flower: the unexpected growth of love between people who couldn't be more different. As day turns into night, A memory unfold as Jord and Aimeric kiss under the cover of darkness. Aimeric gives himself only partially, his left hand holding the secret of his betrayal. With his hand on his waist, Jord doesn't know the strained red thread he innocently seeks to untie is that of the regent, and uknown to him, a lace that is tragically woven too deep to be undone.

as in you'll never achieve the perfect daily routine, sleep schedule, coping mechanisms, mannerisms, fashion sense etc. even after years and years of healing and improvement and self-discovery. you will never be so good at life that you manage to utilize every waking moment. its great to be productive and all but sometimes you'll suck ass. sometimes you'll take eight hours to be done with a twenty minute job. you'll prioritize the wrong thing. you'll sleep for 12 hrs just to avoid being awake. you'll relapse. and you'll relapse again. you'll forget to turn in the assignment. you'll order too little food. life is far too large and complex for you to even experience it completely, much less try to make sense of and control it. you can't. please give up on that and be at peace with the hours you lose. they are not separate from your life.
