Another thing—I was recently at a dinner with educators and authors put on by my publisher to talk about our books, but instead we all talked about (and ironed out) the ways this tech is adversely impacting classrooms and what to do about it. It leaves no room for much else.

We could have been talking about art and stories and the things students like or respond to, but instead we have to devote all this time and oxygen toward sussing out how to get students to engage with material again. It’s stealing all our time while also stealing all our art and labor.

Happy to help! To give an idea of time and effort, all of the above is stuff I regularly entrust to new volunteers on their first day, even if they don't have prior experience. A project like this would be split across two days, 3-4 hours each day, with most of that being waiting for stuff to dry.

After the final coat, burnish with steel wool, then tshirt, and you're finished! Paste wax can be applied over shellac for a little more protection and beauty if so desired.

You want to be firm but gentle with steel wool. If it starts releasing little grey/black flecks, you're pressing too hard or it tore on an edge. After burnishing, wipe down with a clean tshirt to remove any dust and apply another few coats of shellac. I usually do 3-4.

Let dry for 45 minutes, and see if it's dry to the touch. If it's at all tacky, keep waiting. If there are any drops or blobs, gently wipe them with a bit of fresh alcohol so there isn't a sticky bit left when the rest is dry. Once fully dry, rub steel wool in circles to even out the surface.

Squeeze excess alcohol from your applicator then dip it into the shellac. Squeeze out just enough so it doesn't drip. Apply in long strokes that overlap slightly. Shellac dries very quickly but is very forgiving so don't worry about any brush strokes, smudges, or other blemishes left behind just yet

To apply shellac, first pour a small container of fresh alcohol to keep your applicator in. I like to apply it using a square of tshirt and wrap it around a bit of wadded up shirt or some cotton balls, but you can also use a fine bristle brush. I like a taklon brush, but most any type will do fine.
